Android Virtual Device - How to install Collect

Hello,
Been using ODK for over a year, but now is the first time I want to demo it
on a PC. Got the emulator running (AVD), but can't figure out how to get
the collect .apt installed on it. There is no file browser app on the
virtual device to go to a virtual SD card and install it from there. And
when I use its web browser to go to Google Play, it tells me that Collect
is already installed on my phone. Thanks Google Play, I knew that, I just
want to install it on the virtual device on my PC.

Download the .apk file(s) to your PC.

adb install yourapp.apk

(adb is in the platform-tools directory of the SDK).

Mitch,
Is there a folder on my PC that is the virtual SD Card of the virtual
device? Or is it more complicated than that?

It is more complicated. You need to install ADB. Please read:
