Briefly, _appearance_ generally controls **how** the question will be displayed (eg what particular UI widget is used to show it, what keyboard to use, etc). Whereas _relevance_ is used to specify dependencies on **whether** to display the question or not, depending on the result of (previous) question's responses; ie show/hide logic. Follow above provided links for details on how to specify these in XLSForm (or if you are not using XLSForm please say so and I can describe how to specify them in the raw XForm XML). - Gareth ---
