Briefcase is failing to download instances after first 1230

Using ODK Aggregate with Google App Engine, I can download 1230 instances
(using Briefcase 1.4.5) but then get the Internal Server Error below:

fetching instance 1230 ...
SUBMISSION NOT RETRIEVED: Error fetching submission uri:
uuid:baa1ad5d-9a3f-4be7-b80d-adb5557fee19 details: Fetch of
C:\Users\tgraydon\Desktop\Briefcase\ODK Briefcase Storage\forms\IAC Peru
1.6_TEST\instances\uuidbaa1ad5d-9a3f-4be7-b80d-adb5557fee19\submission.xml.enc
failed. Detailed reason: Internal Server Error (500)

Subsequently I get a different error for instances 1231 to 1300:

fetching instance 1231 ...
SUBMISSION NOT RETRIEVED: Error fetching submission uri:
uuid:6f70e851-5496-4d55-8e4c-9c3d2296d266 details: Invalid use of
SingleClientConnManager: connection still allocated.
Make sure to release the connection before allocating another one.

After this, the program does not progress, simply displaying an unchanging
'retrieving next chunk of instances from server...'

If I simply go ahead and try to export, I get the message 'FAILED!' in the
lower left corner of the program, though CSV files containing 903
interviews are generated.

The full Detailed Transfer Log is attached. Note that the form being used
is an *encrypted *one, and that the problem is a recent one. That is,
previously the interviews were downloading fine (when there were fewer of
them).

Thanks,
Thomas

After looking this today, I am wondering if we are exceeding the Google App
Engine Datastore read quota.

I get the attached error ('The Datastore quota for this project has been
exceeded.') when clicking anything below Cloud Datastore in the Developer
Console. I'm happy to pay to raise the quota, but cannot figure out how –
the instructions I see online do not match what I see in the billing
section of the Developer Console.

Thanks,
Thomas

A further update: I'm not getting the quota error on the Google console
anymore, yet the form pull still fails at instance 1230.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks Mitch,

I've fixed the quota issue now by setting a limit in the old App Engine
console (this is what I couldn't find earlier). It does not appear to be
related to the data retrieval problem, but was annoying in itself.

Regarding the data problem: one interview (the same one Briefcase stops at)
gives the general error HTTP code 500 when I try to access it directly via
its specific URL (same as the 500 code in the Briefcase details).
Curiously, it also has a broken image within ODK Aggregate (see attached).
The interviews after this one seem fine again when accessed via their
specific URLs (that is, the browser offers me the option of downloading
binary data), which is hopeful.

I'm currently trying to locate error messages in the log that match those
in the 'Reparing a Filled-in Form Submission' document. I'm not sure if
saving the interview is a possibility, or whether we need to delete it
(given the forms are encrypted). I also don't know whether deleting this
one bad interview can reasonably be expeted to fix the issue and is a
sensible thing to do!

Any advice much appreciated.

Thanks,
Thomas

Thanks Mitch, much appreciated.

I followed the instructions, but my App Engine console said 'To invite
users to this project, use the new Developer's Console.'

So I did that, where the options are Can view, Can edit and Is owner.
(Perhaps these are functionally equivalent to Viewer, *Developer *and
Owner.)

I've set you to 'Can view' – if I need to upgrate you to 'Can edit', it
appears I can do this once you've accepted the invite. Just let me know.

The project name/id is 'iac-peru-2015'.

Yes, I was able to enable billing, but any pull still stalls at 1230 with
the same error messages I originally posted.

I decided it was time to delete the survey producing the error, but it
turns out I cannot do that either (see attached error message).

So we are still very stuck.

Note that the quota resets every 24 hours.

You may have had access to your server before running ODK Briefcase, and
exhausted it at this same record. Check that you can access the website to
confirm that you still have quota.

Quota limits would be indicated by a red bar on the old appengine console'
"Billing Status" section, accessed via https://appengine.google.com/

On the new console https://console.developers.google.com/project after you
select your project, there should also be a "Billing Status" section.
Unfortunately, there is no color change or warning/alert to indicate that
you have exceeded quota. The quota that would be exceeded is the
"Datastore Read Operations" quota:

Datastore Read Operations
0.05 of 0.05 Million Ops

If you see 0.05 of 0.05, you have exceeded the free quota.

··· -------------------- Look in the ODK Aggregate log to see if there is a more detailed error.

This error can be caused by a corrupted submission record, which might
occur if a submission is being processed at the moment you run out of
quota. If you see an error referring to a 'Problem persisting data or
accessing data...', you will want to update to ODK Aggregate 1.4.7 to allow
you to fix this issue. See
https://code.google.com/p/opendatakit/wiki/AppEngineTroubleshooting#Reparing_a_Filled-in_Form_Submission

Looks like you added billing and a pull is now in progress?

The errors on June 25th were caused by running out-of-quota, as were the
errors on July 1st.

Hi Mitch,

I am having a similar problem. I can only fetch 291 instances using briefcase then i get the "retrieving next chunk of instances from server.... FAILED".

I adjusted the quota...(which the Google folks said is automatic for a paid app instance) but still not working.

See attached screenshot!

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Wycliffe.

Hi Mitch,

I am having a similar problem. I can only fetch 291 instances using
briefcase then i get the "retrieving next chunk of instances from
server.... FAILED".

I adjusted the quota...(which the Google folks said is automatic for a
paid app instance) but still not working.

See attached screenshot!

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Wycliffe.

Looks like you added billing and a pull is now in progress?

The errors on June 25th were caused by running out-of-quota, as were the
errors on July 1st.

Thanks Mitch, much appreciated.

I followed the instructions, but my App Engine console said 'To invite
users to this project, use the new Developer's Console.'

So I did that, where the options are Can view, Can edit and Is owner.
(Perhaps these are functionally equivalent to Viewer, Developer and Owner.)

I've set you to 'Can view' – if I need to upgrate you to 'Can edit', it
appears I can do this once you've accepted the invite. Just let me know.

The project name/id is 'iac-peru-2015'.

Thanks again,
Thomas

Using ODK Aggregate with Google App Engine, I can download 1230
instances (using Briefcase 1.4.5) but then get the Internal Server Error
below:

fetching instance 1230 ...
SUBMISSION NOT RETRIEVED: Error fetching submission uri:

Error (500)

Subsequently I get a different error for instances 1231 to 1300:

fetching instance 1231 ...
SUBMISSION NOT RETRIEVED: Error fetching submission uri:
uuid:6f70e851-5496-4d55-8e4c-9c3d2296d266 details: Invalid use of

Make sure to release the connection before allocating another one.

After this, the program does not progress, simply displaying an
unchanging 'retrieving next chunk of instances from server...'

If I simply go ahead and try to export, I get the message 'FAILED!' in
the lower left corner of the program, though CSV files containing 903
interviews are generated.

The full Detailed Transfer Log is attached. Note that the form being
used is an encrypted one, and that the problem is a recent one. That is,
previously the interviews were downloading fine (when there were fewer of
them).

Thanks,
Thomas
