Can collected data be moved from one Android device to another

Wondering if anyone might have some insight on how to do the following

We want data collectors to collect data on thier android device

then we want the data collectors to be able to transfer the data
collected on thier device to thier supervisors device

Once the supervisor has reviewed the data from his/her android device,
we would like him/her to be able to then submit it to the aggregate
server

If any one has ideas about accomplishing this we would be very
appreciative.

Abie

Could you link the Instances folder to Dropbox or a similar service?

I think the less complicated thing would be to have your data
collectors browse the devices, find the data folders zip and send to
supervisor. Supervisor will have to then using briefcase send the data
over to the server.

Not sure if this would work for you but I have a similar system going
on in a project I working in.

Hmm, not sure that linking can be done. But using an app such as ES File Explorer the folder can be compressed and uploaded to Dropbox at the end of the day.

Unless the mismatch between collecting and uploading devices would produce an error?

Jerry thanks for the input - we tried copying the instances folder from one
device (data collectors) to another device (supervisors). We did it by

(1) downloading the same blank form from the aggregate server down to both
the supervisors and the data collectors device
(2) We collected data in a form on the data collectors device-
(3) we then copied the instances folder from the data collectors device to
the supervisors device - we did this by connecting both devices to a pc via
USB and then copying the instances directory from one device to the other
(4) we disconnected both devices from the pc
(5) We went into ODK and tried to edit saved forms on the supervisors
device - but the data file wasnt listed in the tool

Would you expect that to work - or is there some reason that copying these
files over would not have them render in the supervisors device? Do you
know anyone who has done something like this and it worked?

OutSourceRox - I would like to know more about how you are doing something
similar. We want the Supervisor to be able to review (and possibly update)
each data collectors data in the context of the form their collectors
entered the data in. But we want them (the supervisor) to be able to do it
on their (the supervisors ) device so that the data collector can continue
to collect data. Once the supervisor completes reviewing the records,
he/she can submit them to the server. This way the data collector can move
on with his/her device and continue to collect data while the supervisor is
reviewing the previous days collected data.

Is this similar to what you are doing? In what you described sounded like
the review is on the collectors device - and then moved via briefcase to
the supervisors.so that it can be transmitted from the supervisors PC -
what we are trying to do is let the supervisor review all the data while
data collectors continue collecting.? Let me know if what you described
would help achieve that or if you have any other suggestions.

Thanks everyone for your help, any further assistance or information is
much appreciated,

Abie

No idea, I was just thinking of the physical side of the problem.

I might suggest importing the data directly into Briefcasehttp://opendatakit.org/use/briefcase/either from the device itself or from an emailed instances folder, but
although the data can be exported and viewed, I am not sure if it can be
edited before uploading.

Jerry,

Thanks for the input. Looks like we found that if you copy all the
directories and files in the ODK directory from one device to another - the
new device is able to view and edit the records. We need to test - but if
that works it enables s to have a quality checkpoint before sending the
records to the aggreaget server

Thanks again for your input

You will need to copy the entire /odk directory tree from one device to
another; you cannot "merge" or "combine" data from multiple devices through
this means. i.e,, you cannot combine data from two or more data collector
devices onto one supervisor device, for example.

The status of the filled-in form submissions ( incomplete / finalized /
sent ) is stored in a metadata file ( /odk/metadata/instances.db ). There
is no way to recreate this status by scanning the file system, which is why
simply copying the instances directories across devices does not work.

Hello Mitch,

Sorry to ask a seemingly stupid question...

If you copied the entire /odk directory tree from one device to the other,
are you able to call up the same form and have it continue with the
instance created from the first device you copied from?

Thanks in anticipation of your response.

Chinedu,

Yes, copying the entire odk directory from one device to another will give
you the same content - complete with status information. However, you need
to be careful. The directory contents need to be stable when you attempt
this (not being modified by Collect). Also, as Mitch indicated in his
previous email, it is all-or-nothing. You can't pick and choose forms, you
are replacing all Collect content on one device with all content from
another.

Hope that helps,

Brent
