Can forms be pre-filled with data (not just defaults)?

Hi,

I'm new to ODK, so apologies if I'm missing something basic; I've
searched, but found nothing.

I'm wondering if it's possible to pre-fill multiple data along with
form. Not just default data for particular questions, but a whole
list of partially-filled-in forms.

For example, we need to give our field assessors a list of places they
need to assess, and for each one they'll need to fill in a form. I'd
like to avoid giving them a separate list of the places to assess,
because then they'd have to enter each one manually into new form
instances.

Hope this query makes sense!

Thanks,
Sam.

Sam:

we are working on something that we hope to announce later this summer. It
is called ODK Tables. Basically, it is a viewer on a DB table that can be
downloaded from Aggregate or imported from a .csv file. Table columns are
data fields. One of the columns can contain a form name. By clicking on
the form name in a row, you start up ODK Collect on that form with data from
the table's columns used as default values for the data fields in the Xform
with the same name. Similarly, upon completion of the form, the data
entered is placed in the appropriate column. I think this would handle your
use case.

We will be presenting a paper on ODK Tables at NSDR2011 in Washington, DC on
June 28. After that we'll make more information available. Would you be
interested in being an alpha user?

Hi,

I thought it would be pertinent to mention that the next version of
Group Complete will have a feature that enables users to pre-populate
forms using a simple CSV file.

Please follow @groupcomplete on Twitter or subscribe to our newsletter
at http://groupcomplete.com for more information about the upcoming
release. I'd also be happy to respond in more detail off-list since
this isn't an ODK thing per-se.

Cheers,

Matt

Hi All,

I'm evaluating ODK for a project, already have the ODK Aggregate installed on Google App Engine and ODK Collect (customized a little bit) on my Android Tablet. Everything is fine until I realize that I need ODK Tables to do synchronization of data from one ODK Aggregate instance to multiple ODK Collect.

I've successfully download the source code of ODK Tables but still have difficulties in compiling and packaging to APK. I will ask in ODK Developers group about this problems, but right now I need to evaluate ODK Tables for a demo.

Is there any links to the pre-compiled/pre-packaged APK of ODK Tables that I can simply run on my android tablet and evaluate it?

Thanks.

Yes, I'd be really interested in trying ODK Tables! Sounds like just
the thing.

In the meantime, we're investigating generating forms from our
database, but the details of that haven't really been figured out.

Thanks,
Sam.

(I just replied to this, but it seems not to have sent; apologies if
I'm posting twice.)

Yes, we'd love to try out ODK Tables!

Thanks,

I would also be interested in testing ODK Tables if you have need for
more alpha/beta testers.

No. The goal is to have this cleaned up and in an alpha, or better, status
this summer. Until we achieve that milestone, there won't be an APK.

I'm curious as to what the issue is that led you to believe that you
require ODK Tables (or some perceived functionality of it) for your

sam,

in lieu of odk tables, generating forms (or instances) on the fly is a pretty good option. another is to have a form with a select1 at the beginning that branches on the place you select. then for each branch, fill in the defaults as needed.

To clarify further: posting an APK opens up a lot of support for code
that is not ready for consumption. We get enough email already, so
until the code is ready, we don't put out binaries.

If there are build issues with the source, we are glad to address
those on the developers list.

@yaw: a good idea! It wouldn't be unduly huge, hopefully: a form
filled with some few hundred branches; would it work okay? I'm
looking into generating the form at the point when the client requests
the formlist, based on the username being sent from the client...
still many details to be figured out!

I'll post back here with whatever we figure out!

we haven't tried hundreds of branches, so no clue how it'll all work.
try building some dummy forms and see how that goes.
http://xform.childcount.org can build forms using excel and it'll
probably be the fastest way to test out this idea.

It would be great to hear about your use case and timeline.

We are also interested. We are running a project right now where we want
to review previously collected data, on the tablet (as this is the most
usable user interface right now), to detect and correct problems (data
cleaning).

So ideally we'd like to either download all instances from the server, or
display a list for the user to select and download one, they check and
modify it, and if modified they resubmit it to the server.

We are doing this right now and I'm in the process of developing a UI to
allow doing just this within Collect itself, so if you have any code you
can share, even not fully working, I'd be interested in trying it and
happy to collaborate and submit patches if we end up using it. However
this is only possible for the next few days, as we are almost out of time.

Cheers, Chris.
