Can ODK be used to track information from the same participant over time?

I am looking for a data management system that allows us to keep link information on the same participant collected at different points in time, using different questionnaires. Is this possible with ODK?

This is one of the primary goals of the ODK 2.0 software (which has not yet
been released).

Various companies have added functionality to ODK 1.0 to better support
this usage. e.g., see Survey CTO or, for medical applications, CommCare.

I would say that is doable so long as you have a data element that uniquely identifies the respondent. Typically an email address would be used for this purpose although people can change their email address or have multiple email addresses so it isn't foolproof.

Yes. Others have separately managed barcodes or QR codes to identify
households or sites for follow-ups. The data collector scans the barcode
at the beginning of the survey.

The trick is on pre-populating the existing responses so that the surveyor
has access to them. This can be done via the external CSV query
https://opendatakit.org/help/form-design/external-itemsets/ or an external
App https://opendatakit.org/help/form-design/external-apps/

The less prior information you need to have available when the data
collector does the follow-up, the more successful you will be in crafting a
solution using ODK Collect.

I'm having difficulty following the advice provided in the
link https://opendatakit.org/help/form-design/external-apps/

My goal is to scan one qr code (my qr code has a string and an integer) to
populate two fields in a collect form. Is this possible using the
information provided in the link?

QR codes can be read using the XZing barcode scanner

Then you can define two calculated fields that split apart whatever was in
that QR code.

No need for a custom external app -- or am I missing something.
