Can ODK integrate survey data and laboratory data?

Dear all,

I am wondering if I can organize data from survey and lab result which is
obtained not at the same day. For example, I plan to make a survey for a TB
(tuberculosis) incidence related with environment.
For that purpose, I will make an interview with the people who suffer from
that disease, and collect sample from their blood. The blood sample
examination will be issued by laboratory one day after the interview. How
can I add the lab result into survey data so that I get the whole data from
identity, environment condition and the lab result?
Could anyone give suggestion?

regards,
Afiat

Think instead of two workflows, a survey workflow, and a lab workflow. The
combining of the data from the two workflows happens during data analysis,
not data collection.

During your survey, when collecting the blood sample, you would scan into
the survey the identifier for the lab sample (e.g., bar code on test tube).

If the lab doesn't have a mechanism to record the data electronically, they
would use a different ODK Collect form specifically designed for labwork to
submit the lab results into ODK Aggregate. It would have a field that is
the identifier for the lab sample, and fields for the lab results.

Then, in your analysis, you would export both datasets to CSV (if the lab
already had a computerized system, you could get this CSV directly from
that, rather than requiring that the lab techs double-enter the data).
Then, link the two datasets through the identifier for the lab sample.

Hi Mitch,

Thanks a lot for your suggestion, but I don't really understand how to link
the survey data (csv) with the barcode data (csv) from the lab result.
Could you please explain little bit how to do that?
Thanks for your help.

Best,
Afiat

You will have some "lab test identifier" for the sample sent to the lab
(e.g., barcode on the side of the test tube containing a blood sample).

When the lab completes its processing, it will have results accessed by
this "lab test identifier"

If you are collecting the lab sample (e.g., blood sample) at the time of
your interview, record whatever the "lab test identifier" is for that
sample as part of your survey.

Later, you then need to match up the "lab test identifier" for the set of
results the lab produces with this same identifier that you captured within
your surveys.
