Convert text to date using the Date function?

Hello,
I discovered that the Date function is able to accept a string and convert it to a date; for example jun1980 becomes 1980-06-01.
This is not mentioned in the ODK documentation ( date(days) ).
Is this a known feature which has been missed form the documentation?

As far as I know, neither ODK Collect nor Enketo supports what you describe! The documentation is as intended. Perhaps you could share the steps you used to do this?
