Enketo failing to upload to ODK aggregate server

··· - - Hi guys. - - I am consistently getting the error: 'Sorry, the data server for your form or the Enketo server is down. Please try again later or contact support@enketo.org please' I am using ODK aggregate server ...could anyone point me in the right direction for working through this?

Becky

Can you browse to your ODK Aggregate and log onto it? (i.e., are you out
of quota?)

I assume you set up your authentication credentials per:
https://accounts.enketo.org/support/aggregate/

Dear All,

I have uploaded my form into ODK Aggregate and I am able to access it on my ODK Collect. However, when I fill the form and wants to submit it to ODK Aggregate its just timing out without sending it to the server?

Any one who have came across this problem to help?

Viny

Unfortunately I have just run out of quota and cannot logon and browse to
it....however this has only just happened.

It is strange - I have been able to submit completed forms for the sample
xls form that ODK provides...but not for the one that I have created...even
though the one I have created in excel can be converted to xml using
xlsform...and can be viewed and completed in enketo. So it must be
something wrong with my form I suspect? ...although I cannot find anything
wrong.

Thank you so much for responding to me. Very much appreciated.

Hi Viny,

Is this Enketo related or ODK Collect related? It might deserves it's own
discussino thread.

For reference, the earlier 'NaN' issue in this thread can be monitored
here: https://github.com/opendatakit/opendatakit/issues/1116

Cheers,

If the form can be uploaded to ODK Aggregate, you should be able to submit
completed forms to it.

Note that the form has to be uploaded to ODK Aggregate before you can
submit to it.

Glancing through, you have a group called

F.forest_products
I am surprised that XLSForm accepts that and that it is even possible to
upload this to ODK Aggregate. Remove the period, and my guess is that it
will start working.

Group and field names should begin with an alphabetic character, only
consist of alphabetic characters, digits and underscores; dashes are OK,
but may cause trouble in downstream systems (e.g., Javascript publishers).

Sorry for my late response but I believe we're communicating outside this
forum too. Let's continue this here.

Rebecca, did you try working around the issue that Mitch discovered and if
so did this fix it for you? Did you manage to get ODK Aggregate working
properly (with the /formList URL functioning)?

If the workaround did not work and Aggregate is functioning properly, let
me know. I'll investigate further in the next few days.

Cheers,
Martijn

Hi Mitch,

I did make the amendment suggested but unfortunately it still is not
working. I have been reading through online information about syntax
(through formhubs website) and can't seem to see anything.

  • the original form is easily uploaded to my server as an xml
  • the original sample xls (found online) form is easily uploaded to the
    server
  • the original sample xls form ican be completed online through ENKETO and
    submitted to the server
  • my xls form can be completed through enketo but cannot be submitted to
server as it says server is down.

I have attached the xls form.

Any help you could provide is greatly appreciated - its for some
development work in mozambique. ..but appreciate that you no doubt have
lots of other things on!

Thanks again

Becky

And if you find that the submission from ODK Collect is rejected, please
zip up your /odk directory, and send it to me ( mitchellsundt@gmail.com ).
I can then begin debugging ODK Aggregate.

If that submission works, then if you are using Google AppEngine, look in
your application (appspot instance) log ( reachable via Appengine
https://appengine.google.com/ ) to see if there is an error associated
with the Enketo submission.

Good morning,

After having a thorough scan of the xls form yesterday morning and removing
'<1' in the options spreadsheet I have now tried to resubmit again (I ran
out of google apps quota yesterday so could not persist with submission
attempts)..and it has worked.

I will spend a little time to check it is working for sure...but looks good
so far.

Thank you so much for your responses and support. It does not go
unappreciated!

Have a wonderful day

Glad you worked around this issue Becky. Thanks for letting us know!

I want to add that I think it's generally better to keep the "name" in your
choice lists short and simple. The name will be the value you'll see in the
records collected with this form and simple meaningful names make analysis
easier. I also definitely recommend to not use spaces for these names (the
reason for this is that multi-selects use space-separated lists of values),
though it's sort of allowed for select_one questions.

@mitch, I confirmed that Aggregate won't accept any submissions for that
form. It returns a 500 Unexpected Exception. I could not reproduce it with
a simplified test form, and don't think the <1 and >1 choice names are the
cause. I confirmed that the XML submission sent by Enketo is well-formed. I
have attached a problematic submission for the form sample_xlsformrs.xml
that Becky attached early in this thread. The issue does not occur on
formhub. I also could not reproduce it with ODK Collect and Aggregate. I
suspect this may be because of the small differences between the clients
about which (empty) nodes/repeats to include in the submission.

Thanks Martijn,

The error in the submission is in these two fields:

<derived_forest_product_input_value>NaN</derived_forest_product_input_value>
<fish_gross_value>NaN</fish_gross_value>

Somehow they got a NaN as a value. The decimal value parsing fails,
causing the form to fail to be uploaded.

I want to add that I think it's generally better to keep the "name" in
your choice lists short and simple. The name will be the value you'll see
in the records collected with this form and simple meaningful names make
analysis easier. I also definitely recommend to not use spaces for these
names (the reason for this is that multi-selects use space-separated lists
of values), though it's sort of allowed for select_one questions.

Rebecca, did you try working around the issue that Mitch discovered

If the workaround did not work and Aggregate is functioning

Group and field names should begin with an alphabetic character,
only
consist of alphabetic characters, digits and underscores; dashes
are OK, but
may cause trouble in downstream systems (e.g., Javascript

Rebecca, did you try working around the issue that Mitch discovered
and if
so did this fix it for you? Did you manage to get ODK Aggregate
working
properly (with the /formList URL functioning)?

If the workaround did not work and Aggregate is functioning
properly, let
me know. I'll investigate further in the next few days.

Glancing through, you have a group called F.forest_products

I am surprised that XLSForm accepts that and that it is even
possible to
upload this to ODK Aggregate. Remove the period, and my guess is
that it
will start working.

Group and field names should begin with an alphabetic character,
only
consist of alphabetic characters, digits and underscores; dashes
are OK, but
may cause trouble in downstream systems (e.g., Javascript
publishers).

Did you know that Enketo Smart Paper has now become the #1 tool for data
collection? Don't fall behind. Use it!

Enketo https://enketo.org | LinkedIn
http://www.linkedin.com/company/enketo-llc | GitHub
https://github.com/MartijnR | Twitter https://twitter.com/enketo

The latest version of Enketo (on enketo.org) will now avoid this issue for
new records.

If anybody has records stuck in the queue that won't (ever) submit to ODK
Aggregate, please send me the XForm or XLSForm and the exported file (click
on the Export button in the sidebar of the Enketo webform). After
confirming the issue, I'll work with you to get those records submitted.

P.S. this particular issue can occur when a calculation is added to an
input field with type=int or type=decimal or if XLSForm was not used to
create the form.

Cheers,
Martijn
