Error message whilst trying to import ODK data into STATA

Hi, everyone

I've just downloaded some of the data from our field survey in csv format
and I'm using odkmeta to import into stata 13.1 on a macbook.

I've done this before with other data and it worked jus fine, but for this
dataset when i run the do-files that odkmeta creates to import data
code: quietly do "do files/confidantlive1.do"
it keeps giving me the error message : "residence_provincereserved_name_1
invalid name"

In my ODK form there's a question that asks about the residences of the
respondent's confidante's. It's a grouped question so before the question
the row reads according to ODK column headings
Type: begin group, Name:residence_province,
Appearance: table list

The question itself which is on row 40 in the excel survey.csv sheet
Type:select_one residence_list, Name: q619_1a Label: Where has
the person lived during the past year (2013)?
Then below on row 41 there's an end group.

In the CSV data file that i've downloaded there's an empty column with
heading called "residence_province-reserved_name_for_field_list_labels_40"
before the columns containing data on the residence. I know that
this column exists for grouped data before the columns containing the
actual questions themselves in all the odk csv files i have.

I've checked the do file odkmeta has generated and I have no variable named
residence_provincereserved_name_1, STATA however keeps giving me the error
message above:"residence_provincereserved_name_1 invalid name".

I have no variable called "residence_provincereserved_name_1" in my
original survey.csv which I used to create the ODK xml file, my csv dataset
which I've downloaded or the do.file odkmeta had generated for my data.
In the incomplete stata .dta dataset I have on my computer currently
there's a variable called "residence_provincereserved_name_" with the
variable label "residence_province-reserved_name_for_field_list_labels_40"
which is what the column in my csv data file is called.

I don't know how to troubleshoot this error message and how to fix it so I
can import my data completely.

Thank you for your advice.
Oni

Hi Oni,

I am not a Stata user but I remember our statistician asking us to keep
variable names to 32 or less characters. The issue might the number of
characters of the variable name: residence_provincereserved_name_1

Thanks and Regards

Oni,

You can also ask the odkmeta folks at mwhite@poverty-action.org if this is
an issue they can help with.
