Error submitting large audio files

Dear All,

My organization is a small nonprofit using ODK on Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 tablets to conduct intervention research in maternal and child health in rural areas of Uganda. One of our projects uses ODK to collect long 1 hour long interviews in an audio field, and then collects more traditional survey responses for demographics and basic birth history. The quantitative section works great, but the 1 hour long interviews keep coming up with errors when we go to submit; it says that the file size is too large.

I've read through every forum I can find, and understand that it might be a problem with ODK Collect's maximum upload time or with Aggregate's maximum file size. I am not an overly technical person, but I am the only person in my organization working on ODK (we are very small) and I'm a fast learner. As such, if anyone can point me to a post or has any ideas on how I can fix this problem (or what other information I need to provide so that it can get fixed), I would be really grateful.

Thank you in advance for your help,
Jacquie Cutts

How big (in bytes) are the audio recordings? You should be able to see this
using a file manager on the device. The recordings would be in one of the
folders under the /sdcard/odk/instances directory.

If these are very large (> 100MB), you should see if you can change the
default recording compression of your device's audio recorder. Recorded
speech can be highly compressed and does not need the full fidelity found
in musical recordings (uncompressed telephone conversations are transmitted
at 4kB/sec; i.e., less than 15MB for 1 hour; newer compression technologies
shrink that even farther).

On Tomcat, you can increase the JVM through the configuration of the Tomcat
server.

On AppEngine, the functionality to change this dynamically is now
apparently disabled.

It will require an update to the ODK Aggregate installer to facilitate it.
