Export with Briefcase crashes because jpg does not exist

Hi,

My team in the field recently reported to me that they were unable to
export 15 completed surveys to CSV using ODK Briefcase. I tried myself and
also failed. The export details noted that the jpg did not exist, thus the
export failure. There is an item early on in the survey that asks the
surveyor to take a picture of the completed informant consent form, so I am
pretty sure this is the question that is leading to the export failure.
Any ideas about what could be happening?

Many thanks!

Susie

How is the data being copied off of the device? The fact that the
filled-in form referenced an image, but the image was not present, would
indicate that something is wrong with that step of your processing.

If you are using an Android 4.x device connected as a media device via USB,
and copying the directory over to the PC, please note that* this appears to
be very buggy on Windows*.

The two fixes are either (1) to always power cycle your Android device
before connecting the USB cable, or (2) to use the OI File Manager on
your phone to zip up the /sdcard/odk directory (select the directory, and a
ZIP option will be offered), giving the zip a new unique name* every
time*(e.g., 2015-03-06.zip), and then copying that file off using the
media
device / USB connection. If you use the same name twice, or if you try to
copy the entire directory tree, I believe I have seen instances where it
appears to not accurately copy everything or to return an earlier version
of the file rather than the most recent version.

Thanks, Mitch! We are using USBs to connect Androids (Nexus 7s) to laptop
for form pulling and exporting with ODK Briefcase. One thing I noticed is
that it appears that the photos do get pulled properly through Briefcase:
after doing the pull, I can view the photos with their corresponding
instances in the ODK Briefcase storage folder on my laptop. It is only
when I try to export to CSV that things crash. Prior to this case brought
to me by team members in the field, I had had no issues myself using
Briefcase for pulling and exporting. I also noticed that the odk folder
that was emailed to me from the field (and that is not able to export) did
not contain a metadata folder as all the odk folders that I have copied

Thanks again,

Susie

The metadata folder is ignored by ODK Briefcase.

Hmm. Sounds like the copying process is OK, and the data is properly
available within ODK Briefcase.

Please follow these instructions:
http://code.google.com/p/opendatakit/wiki/ODKBriefcase?ts=1394213133&updated=ODKBriefcase#Running_with_Error_Logging

And let me know what your issue # is for the issue you create.
