Falure in installing ODK aggregate

Hi,
I tried to install ODK aggregate v1.4.4. when it finished. I found a folder named "ODK Aggregate" under the "programmes". However, it is empty!. Hence i do not know where to start to use the Aggregate. Could you kindly telle me what is the problem?

Regards and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Zaixing

What operating system are you using?

You should not "open" the downloaded file within your browser, but should
instead open the Downloads folder and launch it by double-clicking it.

Note that the ODK Aggregate installer requires Java 7 to be installed.

See https://opendatakit.org/use/aggregate/

Dear Mitch,
Thanks so much for the further gaindance. i tried to log on using "Sign in with Aggregate password". but failed again. It think it doese with the authentication (since in the upload script says "Error posting to URL……401 unauthorized, must authenticate first".
Another problem is that the folder "ODK aggregate is still empty.
I tried to upload an attachment of screenshot but failed.

Hi,
A good way to avoid the complex installation of ODK is to use ONA.
Just upload your XLSForm form (questionnaire) there and integrate it with ODK apps installed in your android. Life is much easier here!

Hi Mitch,
I use windows. I installed it as you said by double click.
I also installed Java 7 before installed Aggregate.
Is it possible that the following is the problem:
The upload of script failure since protection of my email. Then I rollbacked, disabled email protection, re-uploaded, then it succeeded.
I installed before in another computer. Same failure of the script upload was encountered. And I found the outcome--same ODK Aggregate folder and empty.
What I can not understand is this time I correct the problem-the email protection-but still get same outcome.
Hope the above description can provide some clue for you to help to find the obstacles.
Best.

I'm confused. The screenshots indicate that you have an installed, running,
operational ODK Aggregate on Google AppEngine.

Is this from an earlier installation?

If so, please create a different application ID via
https://appengine.google.com/ and use that while we debug and work through
your problems with the installer.

Otherwise, given that you have an operational ODK Aggregate, the ODK
Aggregate directory on your local computer cannot be empty if it was used
to upload the operational ODK Aggregate to Google AppEngine. The upload
script output shows that it is working correctly and completed
successfully
. The Authentication warning is expected and does not
indicate a failure.

If this is not correct, please verify that you have the very latest ODK
Aggregate v1.4.5 from the downloads page:
https://opendatakit.org/downloads/download-category/aggregate/ before
continuing.

If you are certain that you have an empty ODK Aggregate folder after the
installer runs, then re-run the installer, but, at the final screen,
uncheck the checkbox for running the upload script.

The directory you specified in the installer should contain one folder,
"ODK Aggregate".

If you double-click on that, it will open and you will see:

appengine-java-sdk (folder)
ODKAggregate (folder)
README.html
uploadAggregateToAppEngine.hta

And if you double-click on the uploadAggregateToAppEngine.hta, it will
launch the upload script.

There are two independent things going on:

(1) during the running of the upload script, the e-mail account must either
not have two-factor authentication, or you must create and use an
application-specific password during the upload. That is expected, and it
sounds like you have figured out a work-around.

(2) when running the installer, it is not placing any files in the
designated ODKAggregate folder.

w.r.t. (2), this is unusual behavior. if you have Java 7 installed
correctly, a possible cause is that you are trying to create this folder in
a protected part of the computer, such as under C:\Program Files or under
C:\Windows or in your Settings folder. The installer is not installing
anything on your computer, but simply configuring and creating files in
this output folder, and then running the upload script in that folder to
upload the files to Google AppEngine. To eliminate the possibility of a
permissions issue causing this problem, it is best to place the files in a
folder under your Documents ("My Documents") folder.

If Java 7 is not correctly installed, you could get this problem, but an
error should occur much earlier in the installer, preventing you from ever
reaching the "Finish" screen.

With Windows systems, if the installer does not work when placing the
folder under your Documents directory, I generally advise using a different
computer to run the installer, as there are so many ways in which the
history of various updates and installers can cause things to break.

Thanks so much for the ananlysis and suggestion. I tried to install under the folder "My documents". it went through the process but again the same problem remaining.

I have attached the running record for you to reveiw. the difference i found from the the recorda is the "authorization".
then i tried to sue the Log onto Aggregate. it did not work either.

Yes, it is a bug that an "ODK Aggregate" folder is created under the Start

This folder does not contain anything because the installer only places
files in the directory you specified in the installer (on the Select an
output parent directory

the installer produces.

The installer should not have created this folder in the Start Menu, but the

Everything is still OK. The identical names of these two folders were

Re-run the installer, specify a different username, upload the files to
your appengine application ID, and try logging in using the 'aggregate'
password.

By supplying a different username, that new username will be initialized to
have the 'aggregate' password when ODK Aggregate starts up.

Once you can successfully log in, you can delete the other super-user
usernames or change the password on the one you want to keep.

Hi,
A good way to avoid the complex installation of ODK is to use ONA.
Just upload your XLSForm form (questionnaire) there and integrate it
with ODK apps installed in your android. Life is much easier here!

Dear all,

I have been following this conversation especially after Zaixing started
getting some error during installation of ODK but by then i started with
ODK Aggregate v1.4.4 windows-installer.
I actually got some error that were close to what Zaixing was
getting.Surely i tried it severally before my disk generated some problem /
error due to some problem i did know but later i mounted another hardisk on
my computer and installed window 7.

I have just decided to enmbark on installation of the same version of odk
that i was installing initially (ODK Aggregate v1.4.4) after doing this
installation am getting the attached output. You can also check the attached
word document to see the last portion of the

Upload progress:

Noticed from the file there is some few hitch. But when refreshing my
instances in the dashboard it has changed from* no deployment* to Running.

I didn't believe !!! I have visited the instancefrom the brwoser and work
very ok.I have been able to change the superuser password accordingly.

Please do check the attached file and see if there is anything that need to
be address with the installer version or may be on my computer

I can Cheer for the time being !!!!

Would be eager to hear from all

Kind request

Good. You have the app installed and uploaded to Google AppEngine.

··· -------------- Note that #1 and #2 both indicate the upload to Google AppEngine succeeded.

The upload script will report that authentication is required if you have
not uploaded anything to Google AppEngine in "a while". If the subsequent
uploads succeed (and they have), then everything is OK. The second upload
attempt was likely run shortly after the first one, and the authentication
was likely still active when that ran, so it never had an authentication
failure.

The authentication during the upload sequence is entirely up to Google's
software - hence why I cannot be more specific than "a while." It seems to
continue to be valid for at least several hours after the username and
password are verified.

All the login screens are all looking good.

If you have installed ODK Aggregate 1.4.4 or 1.4.5, the only account that
is defined will be the username you specified when you ran the installer.
You should click on the "Sign in with Aggregate password" , specify that
username, and user "aggregate" as the password. Once logged in, you should
immediately change the password (via the Site Admin / Permissions sub-tab).

ODK Aggregate 1.4.5 is the most recent release, available here:

If you have installed ODK Aggregate 1.4.3 or earlier, the installer would
have asked for a gmail account. In that case, you would choose "Sign in
with Google" and log in using that gmail account. The account name you
enter must exactly match the capitalization and spelling shown in your
gmail settings.

Once you have logged in, you can use the Site Admin / Permissions screen to
restrict access to authorized users (vs. the anonymous user), and create
other user accounts or add gmail accounts to the set of authorized users.

Note that beginning in April, gmail account access will stop working.

Note also that if you mis-type your password for the ODK Aggregate
username, you must close all of your browser windows and re-open them in
order to re-try with a correct password. Otherwise, regardless of what you
do, you will always get a screen like #4. Another option is to always log
in using an incognito or private browsing window.

with before. tried installation before and after clearing email protection.
However either way it did not work. I have attached the running record for

"authorization".
then i tried to sue the Log onto Aggregate. it did not work either.

Thank you for including the full txt from the progress dialog.

Two different errors are indicated:

(1) there seems to be an error sending the "cron job" configurations to
Google AppEngine. I have not seen this error before. This can affect the
performance of ODK Aggregate when using publishers or exporting data to CSV
or KML files. I.e., normal operations will work fine, but anything that
'works in the background' may break because the "cron job" configuration
controls these background activities.

(2) there seems to be an error in the installation of Java on your
computer. You might try uninstalling Java and downloading and running a
newer Java 7 installer
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jre7-downloads-1880261.html

I do not believe (1) is related to (2), and from the errors, I suspect (2)
does not impact the uploader in any significant way.

w.r.t. (1), try re-running the upload script by going into the ODK
Aggregate directory (this is NOT the folder accessible via the Start menu,
but is found using the File Explorer) and double-clicking the
"uploadAggregateToAppEngine.hta" file. Do you still get this error?

It is hopefully a transient failure that Google has fixed.
