Geo codes

After I collected some few locations I was able to do the following;

  1. On the aggregate I visualized the data the mapped it (Geo pint to

map). It appears on a map of all locations that I collected.

  1. Also I’m able to export the data to KML files that is able

contains even a media like a photo or webcam/video.

  1. Also I was able to publish the data as a Google fusion table then

select both upload Existing and stream new submission data and published,
making them available on the Google docs. from Google docs I can:

· visualize than press map, and all data appears on the Google map.

· I can configure info window and amend what information is to
appear on the map.

· I can also configure map styles and choose an icon for a
specific location or outlet.

· I can also export to KML files which is also possible to be done
at aggregate.

· I can get link, share link (like one I shared with you with view
and edit rights). I can get KML network link and embeddable link.

· I can press file, then Geo code. It picks the location
automatically. Here they say that the data is now available on Google map.
Though they say “There is a limited number of geocodes offered for free per
user per day, so very large data sets may require repeating this step until
the file is entirely Geo-coded” on our case we may need to Geo-code 5000
locations but if it is appearing then we wont have a problem because we can
create many users or talk to Google inc. for guidance or first consult you
in case there is another way out.

  1. Something else I did was to map some few locations which are well

available on Google map, the way we need our locations to appear, though
this I did manually, have a look at them,

  1. Also I downloaded Google earth and the data is appearing very well

on my laptop using google earth, though we may not advise use of this since
one has to download to use it. Also its only appearing on my laptop yet
here the objectives is geo coding.

The big questions now are as follows:

  1. Why is this data still not available on Google map as the way the

locations on No. 4 above are.

  1. We want to place this as a link on our website as well as it

appears on Google map. On our website it will have the locations of our
data only, the way it appears after we visualize then map.

  1. The data available after visualization is not the best way as the

photo appears as a link, other than the image itself, one has to click the
photo and it opens on another new page. We want it to appear as it is onn
No. 4 above.

Something else I needed from you; there are those locations you did as a
pilot at Kayole and Kerugoya, I have never seen this report and if you have
it I will be glad to have a look at it and if possible including the
methodologies you used and the results.

Peter,

You make some good points. Aggregate visualize mapping needs some
updating as it's using an older google maps api and it was done in
hurry.

Many people who want to make a nice customized map that they can
control more easily setup Aggregate's publish feature and send the
data to Fusion Tables and use FusionTable's mapping capabilities or
GoogleSpreadsheet and use spreadsheet mapper.

We will be improving Aggregate in the near future but I can't give you
a date so in the mean time I would play with the publishing feature
and have the data streamed and let Google's infrastructure keep your
map updated the way you want it.

Thanks Mitch,

But from your point of view, can one really geo code and the data appear on
google maps, becasue why is there that option for geo code in the google
fusion table and does it really map the meta data.

what is the best way to upload locations on Google maps if one is located
in Kenya.

Fusion tables use of Google Maps is a different question. First, you need
to ensure that on your ODK Aggregate, under Site Admin / Permissions, you
have "Allow anonymous retrieval of images, audio and video data (needed for
GoogleEarth balloon displays)" checked (and you've saved that change).

Then, from within Fusion Tables, open your table.

Go to Edit / Modify Columns, choose your image column, choose the format to
be "Four Line Image" or more, and save.

Then if you go to Visualize / Map, the image will display, rather than the
long link when you click on the marker.

If you only want to show some columns from the table, you will need to
create a view of just the subset you want to show. Go to View / Filter,
choose to create a view, choose the data you want to show in the map
pop-ups, save the view, then Visualize / Map on this view.
