format.

Thanks,

Yes Dan.

Using Briefcase for exporting data is not clear enough in the ODK website.

Thats my question..how to pull the XML file to briefcase? I have the XML
file as a local copy (there is no ODK Aggregate in the picture).

I need help on how to use Briefcase and export data from local copy of XML
file.

Thanks,
Bindu

ok so this is how I do it.

  1. i copy the odk folder from my rebooted android device to a location on
    my computer
    2.i open briefcase
3.i make sure i'm on the pull tab
  2. i then click on the drop down and make sure I select pull data from and
    select custom location(last option)
  3. then click on connect or browse - and go to the location you copied the
    odk folder to
  4. i then press pull - this will then show me a list of forms that are on
    my device
  5. you can then go to the export tab and select the forms you want to
    export as csv

sorry that's from memory so some of the clicks and names of sections may be
a little bit wrong but that should be enough to get you up and running.

thanks
dan

Hi Bindu,

You actually need a copy of your forms and instances folder not just the
xml file.

If you still have your device that the forms was completed.

If you connect the device to your computer then browse the device you will
see a folder ODK - open that and make sure you copy of forms and instances
to your computer - then point brief case to the folder they are in.

i had a similar problem when I first started out with briefcase then found
out you have to point briefcase at the entire folder

cheers

There's another way that I use, which I personally find simpler, but do
whatever you're most comfortable with.

Looks like a lot of steps, but I just break it down so it's easier to
follow if you're new to it.

  1. Download ODK Briefcase
  2. Place SD card with completed surveys into your computer OR "mount"
your PDA to your computer (link with a USB cord and hit whatever button
pops up, which should be along the lines of "Mount Device" or "Allow USB
debugging" depending on the device or OS, not sure)
  3. Create a folder to save survey data into (for my project, since we're
not using Aggregate which de-duplicates instances, I like to create a new
folder with date and name of surveyor each time I load data from a device)
  4. Open ODK Briefcase
  5. On the tab "Pull," click on the bar to the right of "Pull data from:"
(top left) and choose "Mounted Android SD Card"
  6. In the next row, choose the relevant SD Card
  7. In the main screen, find your survey and tick off the check box to
    the left of it
  8. Hit "Pull" button at bottom right of page
  9. Wait until you see the "SUCCESS!" message on the application. (Could
take up to a few minutes if you're loading a lot).
  10. Now go to the "Export" tab
  11. Pull down the bar to the right of "Form:" (top left) and choose the
    relevant survey
  12. Hit the "Choose" button to the right of the 3rd row (Export Directory)
and choose the folder you created in step 3 above
  13. Click "Export" button on the bottom-most right of the application
  14. This should load very quickly and will give you the same "SUCCESS!"
    message
  15. Now the data is all in the folder. Any repeat groups (loops) will be
in separately-named excel files in the folder (in the form
SurveyName_RepeatGroupName.csv), while the rest of the survey will be in a
folder with simply the name of the survey (SurveyName.csv)

Please let me know if this isn't clear,
Sam
