New Form Designer: Vellum

Hi Everyone,

I'm pleased to announce the release of Dimagi's new form designer: Vellum!
You can try it at http://xforms.dimagi.com.

Some features:

  • Tree drag and drop support
  • Fast load times
  • Improved XForm compatibility
  • Support for a wide variety of question types (including 'secret')
  • Support for advanced options (such as JR:PreloadParams)
  • A simplified Internationalization interface: All questions are
automatically turned into IText. No more worrying about default labels
versus default Itext labels, itext ID, etc.
  • Validation checking as-you-edit. Vellum will monitor your form as you
make edits and let you know when you try to do something that will result in
    an invalid form.
  • Excel Itext import and export (experimental)

Upcoming Features:

  • Question templates (e.g. one click to add the common Yes/No/Maybe/NA
    single select question)
  • Excel Support: import forms made in an xls template (such as
XLS2Xformshttp://xform.childcount.org/file for fine tuning in the
    FD)
  • A skip logic/constraint wizard interface (for building simple logic
    into your forms)

I would be happy to receive any feedback (including feature requests) from
the community. You can submit bug tickets/feature requests to our ticketing
system by sending mail to formdesigner-support@dimagi.com or you can contact
me directly at this email address.

Anton,

Is there a Vellum build that can be deployed locally? How do I open a
form I saved to the server?

Thanks,
Adjoa

Hi Anton,

The URL you provided (some time back) gives a 503 response. Do you now have
a different URL so I could see Vellum?

Cheers,

Paul.

Hi Adjoa,

Yes, you should be able to checkout the latest build from the develop branch
at https://github.com/dimagi/FormDesignerAlpha/tree/develop . Check the
README for instructions on how to get it running on your local machine (I
just updated it).

Let me know if you run into any problems with getting setup.

Cheers,
Anton

Hey Paul,

Currently the easiest way to try the latest version of vellum is to sign up
for a domain on commcare hq: http://www.commcarehq.org/home/

Unfortunately I don't think there is a standalone version hosted anymore.

Hi Paul,

Hi Cory,

Thanks for getting back to me on that. Does the Vellum code require
anything else to run, like CommCare?

Unfortunately we accidentally created a dependency on commcare hq's
javascript and style libraries (mainly twitter bootstrap) recently, so we
have forked the code from there. The latest features and fixes are
dependent on HQ, but there is a standalone branch[1] that you can use that
is a bit behind that should not have any other dependencies. We are hoping
to reconcile the two branches eventually - don't expect it to be a lot of
work.

Does Vellum use a propriety file format to load saved forms for editing

like ODK Build?

Nope, Vellum reads and writes straight up xforms.

Or can you just run Vellum on it's own. In other words can you create a
form, export the XML and save to disk, then when you want to edit the form
you just load the XML file and make your edits?

Yes, this is exactly how it works.

I would like to be able to use Vellum with ODK Collect and with ODK

Aggregate, as a replacement for Build which is a bit of a nightmare to host
on your own server.

You should be able to do this in a single page. Here's an example[2] you
can modify from a django app.

cheers,
Cory

Hi Paul,

I responded directly to your google mail address (pali0911@googlemail.com)
since this thread didn't seem relevant to these groups.

If you didn't get it, you can follow up with me directly.

Hi Cory - I had penned part of my response and it disappeared, so I hope I

Thanks for the prompt response.
That is great news about the standalone version. I have cloned this branch
and have it running on my localhost. I had spent a rather frustrating day
(or two) trying to understand why the original code did not display and
then found the external references you have referred to. I was then able to
see the form but without much styling.

Anyway, my next 2 questions are as follows:

  1. what are the functionality differences between this branch and the main
branch and how long would you estimate before they merge?

  2. How do I get the file to save to a specific location in the 'saveUrl:
""' parameter on the index.html page? I have tried a few urls but always
get an error. For example if I want to save to a hosted instance of
    Aggregate (for example 'http:dev.mysite.com/Aggregate/formUpload', what
    URL should I use?

Cheers,

Paul.
