Newbie questions on XLS Form building: values for choices & metadata

Hello and thanks in advance for any advice, I can't quite seem to find the
answers to me questions. I want to start building forms in XLS, then
convert (http://opendatakit.org/use/xlsform/) them for upload. What I would
like to know so far is the following:

  1. For the choices sheet is a it possible to specify the underlying
numerical value of the choice label? For example, with a column headed
"value". So I could then add values 1, 2, 3, 4, etc but also add 777 for
"don't know" and 999 for "refused".

  2. To specify the kind of metadata input I want is something I can't work
out how to do. I assume the basics would be to add "metadata" to the type
column. How do I then specify that I want this field populated with either
    the devieID, startTime or endTime?

Thanks again.

RE: 1) The 'name' column on the choices sheet is whatever string you want
for the choice. You can use numbers here if you want. However, in the ODK
tools, these are just treated as string values, not numbers.

RE: 2) The available metadata properties are listed at the very bottom of
this page: http://opendatakit.org/help/form-design/examples/
