I already have an instance of odk aggregate running on app engine, How
does one go about editing the default html template. I would like to
add styling to the interface. any clues on how this can be done?

We haven't created a default template yet as we have been looking for
someone to work on Aggregate UI if you want to take the lead on it will will
be more than happy to reintegrate the code back. As you can tell right now
there is no style the code is generating the html.
