This is a frustrating change from the simpler Android 2.x phones.
You should connect as a media device.
This exposes a 'Device' on your Mac or Windows system. Under that device,
you can then browse and see the odk directory (this requires an extra app
on a Mac).
You must then copy that odk directory onto your computer,
and then use ODK Briefcase's Pull data from: 'Custom Path to ODK Directory'
to extract the data from that directory into briefcase's storage location.
There are several gotchas here, however:
There are numerous bugs in the "media device" drivers for both Mac and
Windows. These bugs can cause files not to appear and therefore not be
copied to your computer.
If you power off, then power on your device, than, at least for a short
period of time, the media device driver seems to behave itself.
On the Mac, the copying requires http://www.android.com/filetransfer/
On Windows, if you suspect that not all of your files are being copied, you
can use the Android app, OI File Manager, to zip up the odk directory, then
copy that one file over.

Finally, when using ODK Briefcase in this manner, it is important to
remember to complete all not-yet-finalized forms before doing the transfer,
and to delete all filled-in submissions once you have completed the
transfer.
Failing to do this will pollute your result sets with incomplete forms and
duplicates of all filled-in forms.

I've downloaded ODK Briefcase and was told it was simple to just connect
via USB and get the files off. My tablets (ASUS Memopad 7 HD) don't have SD
cards so I go the USB route. However my only two options for connecting
them are as a media device or a camera device. ODK Briefcase doesn't
recognize them being connected by USB. I tried copying the 'instances'
folder to a local folder on my computer and opening it that way, but no
files show up when I set the ODK custom path to that directory.
Is there an easier way of doing this? I need a non-internet means of
combining surveys from various tablets into single excel files to be
exported.
