Ed,
You can try using an external GPS that is faster and connecting to it
via Bluetooth. You can also try running something like Google Latitude
in the background to help prime the GPS, although this may impact
battery life.
Finally, you could try using a few NTP hacks to speed up acquisition.
This requires rooting the phone, but works pretty well.
