ODK Manual suggestions

Hello,

I'm starting to convert all of the reflections about our work found
here: http://africasoils.net/labs/mobile/ into a pdf manual. I hope it
will be another useful resource for ODKers, particularly (but not
exclusively) those conducting agriculture and/or location-based
research.

I would love any feedback on what would be most useful. Who do you
like/not like about existing manuals? Should it be detailed or short?
Things like that.

Here's my Table of Contents so far to give you a sense of what I'm
thinking.

This is an awesome idea, Eric!

Personally, I'd love to see the manual maintained in a Google Doc (or
wiki? repo?) so the community could update it as things change.

If others want to see where some of the existing guides are, you can find
them at http://opendatakit.org/help/training-guides/.

This is an excellent Idea and we would be happy to contribute (Yaw
suggestion of a Google doc makes sense). Also good to see the Locus
interactions- we have some skinny document on this and also getting GIS
data into locus.

Good to add a section of companion apps as well - i.e. we use Pano to
produce panoramas, skitch to annotate images, smart tools for various
measurements as well as a few house keep apps (Astro, appskiller etc).

For us there is quite a lot around the hardware with batteries, power
backup, data backup and waterproofing and it would be great to get other's
experience with this.

Over here at The Carter Center we're working on a manual and training
curriculum simply for using ODK Collect. So we could perhaps
contribute or share content for your page 10. (Although I'm not sure
how you're going to fit it all on one page!)

Our situation may be somewhat unique in that we have to brief 50-60
observers on how to use ODK, and we only have about an hour to do it.
Doing a lecture with a demonstration just doesn't seem to work. So
we're experimenting with 'train the trainer' models where a team of
pre-trained trainers fan out during the briefing session and each
works with a small group.

We also have a 'cheat sheet' that we send out in the phone kit. We're
currently trying to improve that as well. I'd be happy to share it if
there is interest.

Also if others have faced this challenge, I'd be interested to hear
how you dealt with it.

Thomas et al,

To clarify re: "So we could perhaps
contribute or share content for your page 10. (Although I'm not sure
how you're going to fit it all on one page!)"

The numbers I have listed don't indicate I only anticipate one page
for that topic. I just copied and pasted the autogenerated table of
contents from the beginning of my word doc.

Yaw et al,

I like your idea of a Google Doc, but it might be nice to track
changes, especially if more than 3 or 4 people get involved. I have
experience using a wiki site like http://www.wikispaces.com for this
sort of thing, but there might be a better solution available, I don't
know. Anyone have a different suggestion? Otherwise, I'll set it up on
a wikispace, and dump my current content there.

Google Docs have a revision history and the ability to restore to any past
version.

Hello everybody,

I just wanted to ask if there's been any progress on the manual or if
it is maybe online already?

I would be really interested in reading it.

Eric,

Let's start with Google Docs and go from there. It's going to be a lot
faster for everyone to collaborate that way.

Olivier,

Eric is making steady progress on the manual. As of today, it's up to
10k words. If you are looking to help, ping Eric and describe what you
could help with.

If you are looking for other resources before the manual is finished
and put online, http://opendatakit.org/help/ has lots of pointers to
other ODK training guides.
