ODK mobile printers quality and availability

Am a member of a research team based at JKUAT http://www.jkuat.ac.ke/(Jomo Kenyatta University), preparing to conduct national wide poultry
birds mapping exercise in Kenya. We are planning to use ODK tools for the
data collection and management in this project.

I successively tested ODK in a local machine (and Android virtual device)
and did a demo and currently we're sourcing for the hardware to roll out by
January 2014.

With this regard we've been looking for the zebra printers but yet to find
any available locally. If there's any reseller you know who can get for us
the zebra printers, it will save a lot of hustle (Kenya or E. Africa).

Are there other models that would produce better quality?

I believe the project will provide an opportunity to collaborate and
benefit us in various ways.

From Rohit Chaudri, one of our grad students that has used these printers
in South Africa:

So far we've been purchasing the printers in the US, either from Amazon or
from Zebra, and shipping to South Africa for the milk banking project.
Don't know about Kenya or E. Africa, but last year we had found a local
supplier in South Africa, but the prices were high and delivery time was
long. So it made sense for us to purchase & ship from the US.

I haven't looked much for other printer alternatives yet.

Am following up with Zebra and try out. What Zebra model would you
recommend for printing long lasting labels. These labels will bear the
Bio-data of the birds in QR or Bar code.

Thank you Mitch

I don't know much about the Zebra product line.

The key question is how much information do you need to print on the label.

If you are using QRCodes, the width of the paper will dictate how much
information you can encode on the label (QRCodes are square). I think it
is a 200-300 characters for the 2.5" printer, but that has been a while. It
is something you might want to investigate before buying a large number.
