ODK Training in Southern Africa?

Hello Community,

Is there any ODK training scheduled in the near future in Southern Africa
that anyone would know of? Or, in Africa?

Cheers,
Makhate

Hi Makhate,

Hello Community,

Is there any ODK training

Which areas do you require to be trained in?

scheduled in the near future in Southern Africa

Which specific countries? I am based in Zimbabwe and would be happy to
meet up with other ODK users in person as part of a user group were we
could give talks/presentations/tutorials.

Best and Regards

It looks like an ODK training that would target the Southern African region
can go a long way. From the tone of all our responses, it sounds like we've
been using ODK and getting help from online material and the community at
large. However, as we all know, nothing beats meeting in person and having
something like a workshop to capacitate all of us. I am suggesting we
organize a workshop; we can suggest a venue. My suggested content is a
thorough training on all phases of ODK:

  • Designing forms for collecting data;
    • My assumption is; we don't just design forms, there's some
preparatory work that sets direction to how the forms will look like.
    • Then comes designing forms; tools for designing forms; best
      practices for designing forms
  • Deploying forms to Collect and Aggregate
    • Configuring Collect to push data to the server
    • Configuring Aggregate to receive data
      • since we're not sure of the type of people who'll be attending
the workshop, some people maybe interested in learning how to install
Aggregate on the platforms they are using.
    • Generating reports from collected data using Aggregate (or any
other tools that people are using)
    • My assumption here is, there should be various ways in which people
are consuming data that is collected. People can bring in their experiences
and share how they're consuming data that is collected.

This maybe a mouthful but i just wanted to share what i had in mind.

Hi folks, the ODK community and the online material have been very helpful but it would be a good experience to meet up with others for discussions and compare our notes.

Curious to see how much interest there is for this in the Southern Africa region.

Mohamed
P.S. Most of the time I am based in Namibia.

Hello fellows

This would be a great idea i so long for this i am based in South Africa and would love to compare notes and learn from others experiences as well

Cleopas

If something concrete comes out of this (a workshop) I would definitely be
interested. It would be good to see how ODK v2 tools are being used out
there, as well as how they CAN be used.

We have been using ODK v1 in Cape Town for a year now and have introduced it to other non profits in the area. All our surveys are now managed in this way. We train community based fieldworkers over 2 days and then deploy them. For form development we setup in excel and then proof in Enketo. The online knowledge base is key to our being able to work on this.
We're using QGIS to map the output which is great but we realy need to deploy ODK 2 to be able to revisit items in the field.

We'd also appreciate the opportunity to workshop ODK , especially v2. Let's grow this thread

Happy to join in for a training! I ran Vera Solutions for 4 years and did lots of ODK projects. Also have built an ODK to Salesforce integration (openfn.org) and am eager to see how folks here are using these tools. Am based in Cape Town. (And know Andrew!)

If there is large enough interest it is possible to have a member of the
ODK core development team attend an workshop in southern Africa. Generally
we (the core team) leave tutorials and training to organizations; however,
with ODK 2.0 betas scheduled to be out in the Sept/Oct time frame and
release early next year getting feedback at an organized workshop in the
fall in Africa seems like an opportunity for dialogue and feedback.

The core team is unlikely to be a driver of putting together such a meeting
but there might be an opportunity for core team members to attend and
present. This is not a guarantee that a core team member will be able to
participate because the team is small and travel budgets are limited.
However, if a workshop does come together depending on the circumstances
there is interest in participation if the timing and availability work out.
There are many things that would need to align for the core team to
participate but we do like receiving feedback from users of ODK and with a
new set of tools on the horizon we want to reach out to get feedback about
unmet needs of the ODK toolkit (not that the core team has the resources to
fulfill all requests).

Regards,
Waylon
