Open Data Kit - Hebrew Language (right to left) form support

Dear ODK community/developers

We are planning a food insecurity survey among food aid recipients in
Israel. The questionnaires will have to be administered in Hebrew, Arabic,
Amharic and Russian. The study is a pilot study with very little funding at
present. We don't have the resources to hire a skilled programmer for data
management.

I am considering having an International Nutrition Masters student from
Ethiopia who was involved in data management with ODK for a USAID project
program the data collection interface. However I have no experience with
ODK and would therefore be of little use in technical supervision and
assistance to him.

The scope of the data collection would be roughly 100 forms for the
pilot/proof-of-concept study and then hopefully scale up to 300-2000
questionnaires per year if the follow up studies were funded.

The paper questionnaire is relatively straightforward with roughly 25
multiple answer questions, with a few free text response fields if the
participant answers "other".

At this point we don't have android tablets and would need to emulate on a
windows laptop.

My questions:

  1. Does ODK support for Hebrew/Arabic/Amharic and Russian?

  2. Are there any users/support groups in Israel? Could someone provide me
    with contact info?

  3. If there aren't Israeli users yet, would this forum be responsive to
supporting / guiding a student with basic skills?

  4. RE: windows emulation - how much more challenging would this make the
    project?

  5. Roughly how many hours would be needed to complete the project by a
    competent ODK programmer?

  6. Am I crazy for even considering this? What other questions should I be
    asking?

Any advice would be welcome (please reply all).

Thanks and Happy New Year,

Aron

Hi Aron,

Take a look at Enketo (http://enketo.org). It runs in a web browser and
solves many of the problems (right-to-left language support, running in
Windows) you have.

How fast this will all take depends on the length/complexity of forms and
how good your student is. Have him/her do a 10 question form with some
branching and all four languages to get a good estimate.

ODK Collect does have translations into Amharic, Arabic and Russian for its
buttons and text. We rely on the user community to maintain these
translations, so some of the newer features are lacking translations. No
user has volunteered to provide Hebrew translations, so we do not have
those.

We have one issue identified for Arabic usage that affects numeric fields
that will be fixed in the next release.
