Referencing external csv file?

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to work on a social networks data collection effort. Basically means going around a village, writing out all adult names, and then asking each individual about every individual "are you family" "are you friends" "do you work together" etc until a NxN matrix is formed.

The process would be in two steps:

  1. Collecting all of the names (and giving them an individual ID number that repeats for each community, i.e. 1 through to # individuals in community)and typing these into a csv file.

  2. Ideally tying this csv file to the ODK form so that in the XLSForm I can just reference the ID number and this pulls the relevant label (individual's name) from the csv file (or maybe a separate sheet in the XLSform excel file?)That way I don't have to make a new XLSform for each village with every single question set for each community member written out (super cumbersome).

Is this at all possible? Or perhaps there is an alternative feasible approach for collecting this sort of structured data?

Martha,

Pre-loading data from a CSV is available today in SurveyCTO
(http://surveycto.com) and it works well. It's free to try so give it
a whirl and see if it does what you want.

Nafundi, UW, and SurveyCTO are working on bringing some of that
functionality to the stock ODK tools, but I can't tell you when that
work will be done.
