Reliable way of Backing Up data in remote areas

Hello,

I'm a masters student who is headed with a group to a remote(ish) part of
Haiti to conduct a water assessment. We created a survey using formhub and
I've been able to get ODK collect working on my android smartphone. We
wanted to make sure that our data would be saved even if the tablets we
plan to take with us were to break. I can't figure out how to ensure the
filled out forms are saved on the SD card and internal memory until we are
able to upload to information after we return. Would I need odk briefcase
or aggregate? We will be using Samsung galaxy tabs.

I appreciate any help as I'm very new to this.

Thanks,
Kavita

if you have portable computers with you, you can use ODK Briefcase:

On comments about Briefcase and ODK saving to the SD card: Some phones do
not allow install of briefcase or ODK to the removable SD card
(specifically Sony Z Ultra and android 4.2 to .3)

I have used Oi File Manager to zip the 'instances' folder. Original records
remain in the instances folder with the addition of a compressed copy. It
is still on the same device which for all intents is not really a backup.
However, you could then move the zipped folder to the SD card using Oi.
Unfortunately the Oi zipped folder will not open in windows. It does show
the appropriate file size in properties though so I assume the data is
there.

I have had trouble getting all xml files to show in Oi and also in windows
file explorer when plugged into the computer. Some do, some don't. Nor will
the offending xml copy over to windows (I do not upload data). It is there
since I can recall the form and see the data. This can be a real concern. I
just finished 500km of roadside survey with 120 instances and was quite
worried when I could not see all xml's at the end of the day. However, I
have never lost any data. It is a file view problem.

The solution I found for direct data transfer is "my phone explorer" which
will transfer files across to windows without loss of the xml. So now I
take a small laptop in the field and download instances at the end of the
day via 'my phone explorer'.

Once you hit finalize or save as incomplete, ODK Collect saves the filled
out form to the SD card or internal memory. This is automatic, there is
nothing extra to do.

Kavita,

ODK Collect saves the data to your device's /sdcard folder.

If your device has a removable SD card, Android will map /sdcard to
that card. If your device does not have a removable SD card, Android
will map /sdcard to a folder inside your internal memory.

If you have a removable SD card and the device breaks, you can remove
the card and get your data. If you don't have a removable SD card,
when the device breaks, you probably won't be able to get your data
back.

Samsung tends to do things in a non-standard way (e.g., it saves to
non-removable storage even if you have removable storage), so I
encourage you to test on your device to figure out where the data is
stored.

If you want back ups for your data, your options are to either upload
the data while in the field to a server (e.g., FormHub) or run ODK
Briefcase on a laptop that goes in the field with you. Nik's
suggestion is also a good one. Again, test before you go.

Kavita,

Easiest way is to eject the SD card. Then connect it to a USB reader
attached to your computer and see if there is an /odk folder.
