@martijnr thanks for the comments. As an FYI, we did have posts and conference calls about the website prior to starting and had a final post about coming to agreement on website requirements which included both ODK1 and ODK 2 for now. We have also agreed to split the documentation of ODK1 and ODK2 into separate websites keeping only a common landing website.
As @yanokwa pointed out there are many things going into the discussions about the Open Data Kit project in general. Per the PMC documents the next round of feedback that the PMC will be seeking feedback on is the Mission and Values of the Open Data Kit project. The following discussion will be on renaming ODK 2.
Part of setting up the Open Data Kit project for the long term is thinking through how it will be able to continue to grow in the future. There will be new technologies and new tools needed so how to integrate them into ODK?
One example of the complexities is the reality that it requires grant funding to keep ODK going and the majority of the available funding is for the ODK project to produce new features and technologies. We did discuss other funding options in the concept notes but people at the convening did not seem that excited about them. Therefore, it seems like we should have a plan to accomplish maintaining the ODK project into the future and have policies and procedures to allow the ODK project to grow and change as technology grows and changes. While DIAL exists today to help to transition to long term open source project their clock is also ticking. Last time I knew DIAL has a limited 6 year term (on year 2 or 3 now) on purpose as the funders want to see a long term sustainable plan that did not include them just giving maintence money every year. Like most programs I am guessing it will morph into something afterwards but I bring this up to demonstrate the sentiment of people who are funding ODK.
Also what if Enketo, OpenFn, Kobo, or any other tool outside the ODK project wanted to move into the ODK project how would we handle that?
I could say more about the complex issues tied together but this discussion is probably best left to the upcoming PMC community discussions on Mission & Values, renaming, etc and leaving this discussion simply to the website.
Additionally, here is the notes of some of the discussion of OD1/ODK2 naming from the convening:
