SMS Sending API

Hi again!

Just curious about the integration of SMS + ODK, and whether anyone
has implemented anything to send an SMS from within an Xform or using
data captured within an Xform. I have noticed the pending javarosa
SMSSendingAPI (https://bitbucket.org/javarosa/javarosa/wiki/
SMSSendingAPI) but was not sure if ODK was implementing its own
interfaces with other programs (as in the roadmap for 1.1.8) or if it
would be done through javarosa? Any vague sense of when this might
happen, or how difficult it would be to develop this functionality (as
in months of developer work?).

Thanks again!
Louis

sms sending isn't a pressing todo for us. if lots of people demand it,
then it's more likely to happen quickly, but currently, no eta.

it's non-trivial to build that spec well, so plan accordingly.

Hi,

it's non-trivial to build that spec well, so plan accordingly.

Remember that if you have a big survey it is going to break the survey
into hundreds or thousands of SMS messages to send and then you need
to try to put them back together on the device. There is also no
guarantee of delivery from operators with sms so if even 1 of your
thousand does not arrive you do not have a complete survey.
This is quite apart from the cost issue involved with all this of course.

agreed. i wouldn't recommend using sms as the only transport
mechanism. i think the spec is more appropriate to send a few timely
chunks of data (say the most important indicators) over sms while the
rest of the form can be sent over another channel (gprs, wifi) at a
later time.

Louis,

Could you share with us why you would like to use SMS?
Are you trying to target cheaper devices? Or something else?
