Storage and battery capacities

Greetings,

I will be taking some of the phones to Tanzania in a few weeks and
want to make sure there will be enough room on them to store all of
the work we plan to do in one day. We plan to do 11 200-question
surveys and take about 25 pictures per day. Is this possible? Also,
what is the battery life-span? Will the phone last for a full day's
use? How many days/hours is the maximum battery capacity? Thanks so
much for the help!

Erin

erin,

welcome and great question.

battery life is dependent on how long the screen stays on at full
brightness, what kind of communication you are using (3g, wifi, gprs),
and how often you will be getting gps coordinates. it also varies
across devices and temperature ranges. there is also how often your
surveyors will have access to charging. basically, there is no good
answer...

from what you describe, i think it'd be prudent to have extra
batteries available to your surveyors. you should also check
http://code.google.com/p/opendatakit/wiki/TrainingGuide for training
tips and links to what experiences others in the community have had...

hope that helps,

yaw

Erin,
Your best bet for extending battery life is operating in Airplane mode. This
will not affect the GPS, which will still operate in airplane mode.
You will be able to get through a whole day on one battery charge, but you
will likely have to recharge every night. (This does beg the question...what
kind of phones are you using?)
I am not sure you will be able to complete 11 200 question surveys in a day.
We were able to do about 4 300 question surveys, but we also travel several
hours per day, so that is a factor. How spread out are your surveys?
The last point is that you have to test in advance, try and replicate your
field conditions as best you can and see how well your battery lasts and how
far you can get.
