Support for setting up an ODK survey

Hello - I am an urban planner and social researcher working with a
community based organisation that represent residents of informal
settlements (slums) in Fiji.

We are considering what options there may be for collecting data from
household surveys more efficiently. One contact has suggested the ODK. In
particular, the key requirements are for the survey to be able to be
offline and geocoded.

I'm interested to see if there may be people in the ODK community who would
be interested in supporting us develop an ODK survey system (we already
have the questionnaire) and working through bugs and with a live example -
for a good cause! We want to learn how to do this ourselves so we want to
minimise the support we would need. However its great to have a 'phone a
friend' option when the bugs and technicalities are confusing us.

Any offers of exchange welcome

Ian

Hi Ian, I am trying to quickly determine the offline functionality of ODK but cannot seem to find an exact answer. I hope you have found an answer since posting your comment.

We have a very capable web forms solution running in a browser. But we need to extend that into forms that can be filled in offline for an extended period e.g. a full day or two in a remote area capturing several separate surveys and then upload them all when in reach of a web connection again.

Is this possible as yet?

Yes, ODK Collect works offline.

It was designed specifically for that use.

Data collectors can interview and collect multiple surveys without wifi or
cellular connectivity.

They can do this until their device runs out of storage capacity.

The software is open source and there are no licensing mechanisms in it
that might restrict how long a device can operate out-of-contact with a
wifi or cellular network.

Once the device returns to a wifi or cellular access point, the data can be
uploaded to a web-based server (e.g., ODK Aggregate), either manually or,
if desired, automatically.

Alternatively, the data can be copied off of the device and processed
locally by ODK Briefcase to generate csv files, without any network or
internet connectivity.

ODK Collect on Android works without an Internet connection. It was
designed to do that and it does it very well.
