Anyone know if it's possible to suppress this screen every time the
scanner is invoked? I browsed the zxing source and don't see an
obvious way, but maybe someone has found a way...

there is something wrong with your barcode scanner install. uninstall
and install the latest version of the app.
then launch it independently of odk collect and you'll get the help.
go through that, and when you are done, try launching it a second time
to ensure the help is gone. then try using it in odk collect.
