The ODK Book! Written by Tomonori HOSHI

It will be a great owner to listen to words from the author of a book. It will be a great owner to meet with you and also get a copy of this book with your signature.
I am ready for contributing to this book is you want to verify English version.

どうもありがとうございます, Hoshi-san. This book is really an amazing contribution to the community!

For me, I think the more options ODK users have to learn from, the better! And I don't think it distracts from the community at all, if anything, it's an opportunity for the community to understand how we can better support Tomonori's initiative.

The problems that Tomonori highlights are things that everyone can help with! A few places to that we can all contribute to are:

  1. Provide feedback on how we can re-organize the docs to make them more approachable. Maybe we really do need to provide step-by-step guides for new users to get started. See (re)Organizing the Docs - #2 by yanokwa to provide that feedback.
  2. Help the docs contributors generate offline-able resources. See this GitHub issue on PDF output and help there.
  3. Start exploring the best way to translating the docs. There was an initial discussion here: Documentation Plans - #18 by wonderchook.

Dear Yaw,

It is wonderful to hear from you. I deeply appreciate ODK developers for the amazing works.

Regarding the documentation project, I did not know about that when I had started writing my book. Thus, improving and translating the official documents into several languages should be the first priority for ODK community as you mentioned.

After my book got printed, people around me keep asking me about English version. The strength of my book is that really detailed step-by-step instructions with many screenshots. It is especially good for beginners. So, I will try my best to translate it. For me, things about DTP (Desktop publishing) are the most troublesome part. Perhaps, at some point, I will ask some community members for help.

Anyway, if English version can obtain help from the community, I am just thinking that it is great to donate book sales of English version to ODK development. Or perhaps a free PDF distribution might be an alternative good option although hireling DTP experts is expensive.

Again, thank you for your great works on ODK development.

Cheers,
Tomonori

Hi ODK community members,

I would like to inform that I probably can upload English table of contents by the next Christmas! Also, I hope the final English version will contain up-to-date ODK features.

You are so awesome, @TomonoriHoshi, big congrats on getting published! Looking forward to more great collaboration getting the word out about ODK.

Have you seen this beautiful video about ODK usage in Japan? Japan's nature centers using ODK and Fusion Tables to digitize nature surveys I hope they've used your book!

Hi Hélène! Thanks a lot for your comments. I was able to publish my work thanks to all contributors here in ODK community. Once i put the original draft of table of contents here, i wish to have opinions from many members.

About the nature centers work, i found that video really recently. That video is also a good ODK advertizement from Japan. I may introduce that video and that team during my ODK lecture next week.

Best,
Tomonori

Hi,

Merry Christmas :christmas_tree:

Finally, here is the English version of table of contents and Chapter 1! It took some time to learn DTP software, but I think now I can design the book itself. The English of Chapter 1 has been checked by a native English speaker, but I think i need someone who can help to check my English after this.

I welcome to have any comments.

Hi,

Merry Christmas to you.
I made changes in your pdf and mark all changes in yellow color. Please find out my copy Here.
I am very happy to help you in this.

Narendra.

I haven't had a chance to read the text, but I think the table of contents are looking pretty good. Some suggestions there:

  1. You have "how to be a good field worker" but I think it would be useful to also include "how to run a data collection project" with advice on who should do what, trainings for field workers, and so on. I think there is a lot of knowledge in that area on this forum.
  2. I think for Build and XLSForm, it helps to walk through each component like you have, but it may be useful to end each chapter with something like a cookbook. You have "create a complicated decision tree" which is maybe similar I think, but it would be nice to have 4 or 5 examples on common broader tasks ("collect information about many children", or "ask a question only at certain times", or "use the result of one question to ask another" just as examples). If you look in the help section on this forum, you will get a good sense of which tasks people commonly need to do but struggle with.

I'll probably have more thoughts eventually, hopefully these help. You can ignore them if you don't think they're useful!

Hi Clint :grinning:

Thanks for the suggestions. Here are my replies.

  1. I added “how to run a data collection project" at the end of chapter 1, but is it possible to ask you to write this section?

  2. A cookbook style must be a good idea :bulb: That is a totally new thought for me, so it's a bit challenging to construct chapters, but it will try. I think I get your point, but just in case, let me allow to confirm if my understanding is correct. According to your suggestions, Chapter 2 and 3 may be integrated, and new Chapter 2 will have around 4--5 sections: Chapter 2-1. Basic survey; Chapter 2-2. A survey for many children; etc. Then, the left pages show Build tutorials and the right sides show XLSForm tutorials. Is my understanding correct?

I appreciate your suggestions and welcome to have more of your inputs.

I don't know if I know enough to write the data collection project section, but if I can get some help from somebody here who has knowledge I can do it.

Your version of a cookbook style is I think maybe even better than mine! I do think it is good to have the basics (simple form, text questions, number questions, choice questions, multimedia questions) up front before moving into things that are more like examples, but if it is possible to do so then integrating Chapters 2 and 3 would be very nice.
