Unique number error checking

Dear ODK group,

I am developing a survey for forest monitoring, one of the inputs is a
unique tree number which is determined in the field. Is there a way we can
code a constraint that stops the input of duplicate tree tag numbers. This
is an error checking requirement.

One possible solution is to have a tree tag number dbase on the phone which
is updated each time a new tree is inputted and is then used to check if
the number has been used already. Is this possible and if so how would I go
about adding this functionality?

Many thanks,
Wesley

I answered a very similar question yesterday on the

The punchline is that you can't do this without adding a bit of Java
code.
