We plan to update the location indicator (the current crosshair icon) to a modern blue dot with an accuracy radius. This change will be coming to both ODK Collect and Web Forms to help users better understand their position on the map. We don’t know when exactly we will fit this into a future release, but wanted to get your feedback early.
If you have been following the changes in Collect 2026.1 beta, you may have noticed we also increased the size of map points to improve usability when creating a shape or trace. Together with the new location indicator, we believe these updates will significantly improve the mapping experience.
Why we're making this change
-
Improved visibility: The blue dot is more distinct against various base layers than the current crosshair.
-
Familiar design pattern: It aligns with the "blue dot" standard used by Google Maps and other major navigation apps, making it more intuitive for data collectors.
-
Accuracy context: Including the surrounding accuracy circle in Web Forms (already in Collect) provides immediate visual feedback on GPS quality.
Potential considerations
We recognize that larger points and the "blue dot" style may impact visibility of high-accuracy (cm-level) workflows. However, our assumption is that these workflows often rely on automated capture rather than manual fine-tuning on the screen. We want to ensure this change doesn't create friction for these specialized use cases.
