Use of Relevant feature with dates

What is the problem? Please be detailed.
Hi.. I want to write a relevant expression using a specific year. In XLS form (excel file) I wrote down:

${today} = '.>31-12-2016' and ${today} = '.<=31-12-2017'

But does not work. I have used also 'date' instead of 'today' without success.

What ODK tool and version are you using? And on what device and operating system version?**

am using ODK collect 1.11.1 and xlsForm.

What steps can we take to reproduce the problem?

What you have you tried to fix the problem?

I don't know what you want to do exactly but generally, it works for me. Here is an example:
