Website stops responding

We have been running multiple ODK sites for a while and recently the web sites have stop responding after a couple of hours. Restarting tomcat fixes the problem temporarily. I have moved a website to a new web server, but that problem continues.

When the website stops responding, it hangs on redirecting users and users can't download/upload forms.

I see errors in the tomcat logs about IO errors to the backend, and the postgres logs show an unexpected EOF. I verified that the firewall is allowing connections from the web server to the database server.

The both Web server and database servers are running CentOS 6 and we are running a postgres db. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Nitin

catalina.out (72.7 KB)

Look in the tomcat6-stdout files (they should have more extensive logging).

Do you see any errors there?

The errors seem to be connection time-outs when contacting the database.

This may be because there are not enough file handles configured on the
database server.

Others have manually edited the WAR configuration to use C3PO instead of
BoneCP for database connection pooling (finding that BoneCP did not behave
well w.r.t. releasing connections).
