What determines the speed of ODK on tablet? Is there an appropriate file size limit on using ODK to prevent it being too slow?

Hi,

The tablet I'm using is Samsung Galaxy Tab 4. It is very slow for running
the form I programmed. I used excel to program it. The XLM file size is 2.4
MB and excel file size is 777 KB, about 3800 lines. The worst thing is
saving and opening a form which takes up to 10 minutes. Once one opens the
form it is not too slow to go through comparing with the opening and
saving, but several screens need a wait of 10-20 secs to get through.

I programmed the roster of a large household size of up to 55 for this
country, there are around 40 roster questions for each person. I used a
repeat group for roster questions other than age and sex. There are 17
modules. There are also many constraints and calculations in the form.

The program is slow that it's workable but I'm not satisfied with the speed
at all. I am wondering if it is so slow because my survey is too big
(probably yes). Is there anyone who has similar experience on big survey
with big household size, and used ODK for such situation? How slow is your
survey?? I'm wondering if there is any advice on appropriate file size
limit for using ODK on tablet. For example, if the file size is above ???
MB, we should seriously consider if using ODK or not as it would be very
slow.

Thank you.

Best,
E

Eva,

A January release of ODK Collect included dramatic performance
improvements, so the first thing to do is be sure that you're not using an
older (slower) version.

Otherwise, see the attached for an excerpt from our SurveyCTO online help,
discussing this very issue. (Apologies that it's not formatted so well.)
Pretty much all of the points should apply equally to ODK Collect.

Best,

Chris
