Where are you buying your Androids?

I have a friend doing an ODK research project in Bolivia. She needs to buy 4
Android phones (likely MyTouch 3G) and while I can recommend some places
where I have purchased them, I never loved the places I got them from and
wasn't very happy with the way it all shook out.

So, ODeeKers, where do you buy your Androids these days?

i've bought two phones from recellulartoo. they have worked well.

of course, you should research how any particular phone works with ODK.

for example, the droid eris has a few known ODK bugs, which is
unfortunate because its cheap.

is there a working list out there of recommended phones?

We've been working on a project at CCNY here in NY and have noticed
that the Huawei Ideo works quite well. It has Android 2.2, and also
is fairly cheap (T-Mobile US sells a version as the T-Mobile Comet,
for ~ $150, albeit locked to T-Mobile US and with the T-Mobile US AWS
bands.)

If you can find an international version of that phone, it might be a
reasonable purchase.

We've found problems though using T-Mobile's MyTouch 3G. It tends to
make ODK Collect 1.1.5 crash.

Great to hear some buying options. Just want to note in response to Satadru,
that my research group has about 50 MyTouch 3Gs and that has been the best
device tested. They've been very very reliable in the field...though we do
have some crashes on save in about 0.02% of surveys. That's a pretty low
rate.

i've been playing with the ideos and i love it.

it's not the fastest thing in the world, but it runs android 2.2, it
feels pretty robust in hand and the touchscreen works well. 1d barcode
scanning on the camera isn't reliable, but 2d barcode scans are quick.

http://newegg.com has em for $140.

We've been doing some work with forms that upload images, using a
variety of devices, and the MyTouch 3G is the only one that has had
crashes - also at save. But the crash rate we're seeing on some forms
is higher than 50% on those devices, and only those devices... but we
have only one MyTouch 3G in our device pool, so that may not be a very
good sample size...

Hi Satadru,

Are your crashes happening when you take pictures? I found the camera
on the MyTouch 3G will crash if you press the shutter button quickly.
When I press the shutter once and wait for the picture to be captured
I'm able to avoid most crashes.

According to our person using the MyTouch 3G, the crashes happened either
when she was taking a picture or when she had the application open and had
input some data and then tried to move to the next screen.

But taking pictures does seem to cause it to be unstable.

would the user be able to connect the phone to a computer and get a
crash log? does the problem happen frequently enough to make that a
possibility?

I'm using a moto droid 1 to test out ODK, and occasionally get crashes on
taking pictures.
If I reboot the phone prior to starting ODK, never had a crash.

Hi,

I've had crashes (28 March 2011, 31 March 2011) on two different HTC
Wildfire models (both UK, 2.2.1, T-Mobile) immeadiately after
downloading and running ODK for the first time. In both cases turning
off the phone, removing the battery and re-starting allowed ODK
Collect to run normally - which it has done since.

As an experiment I've just removed the ODK Collect app, deleted the
ODK directories on my SD card and installed ODK Collect afresh. It now
runs without crashing.

Hope this helps

Kirby

Dear ODKers,

Have you seen any great deals on phones lately? I did a quick search
but nothing stood out.

I did notice the HTC MyTouch 3G 32B is 150 on newegg while the IDEOS
is 140. The slightly larger screen on the MyTouch is a plus, but the
over the air update takes a significant amount of time...
