About ODK Briefcase Storage area

Sorry but I really didn't understand the opening message of
ODKBriefcase1.2.1.jar. Then, I can't upload any submission.
What is exactly ODK Briefcase Storage Location? Am I that need to create
it? Some one can help me like if I was a child? Thanks a lot.

Ricardo,

Briefcase needs to store data somewhere on your hard drive. It wants you to
decide where this should be. You should give it a location, and within that
location it will create a subdirectory in which to store all of its data.
That data will come to include all submissions you download from the
Aggregate server.

Best,

Chris

my xml forms. I copied all submissions to my hard drive, now what I need to

The "Pull" tab has 2 options for placing submissions data into ODK
Briefcase --

  • Mounted Android SD Card -- if you use a USB Mount of the external SD
    Card to your computer.
  • Custom Path to ODK Directory -- if you copied the /odk directory off
the device to your PC. In this case, use the chooser to select what was
the odk directory on your device (the one containing the \forms and
    \instances directories).

The "Pull" process requires the full /odk tree from the SD Card in order to
operate. This is because it needs to access both the form definition and
the submission file, and those are under different directories (...\forms
and ...\instances, respectively).

If you just have the instance xml file, ODK Briefcase will not know what to
do with it. You will need to create a directory structure mimicing what
was on the phone; as a bare minimum, you need to copy the form definition
file into the ...\forms directory and copy the instance file into a
subdirectory under the \instances directory. The instance file needs to
match the naming of the form definition file, and end in a datetime stamp
(i.e., follow the exact naming conventions of these files as they appear on
the phone). The datetime used in the directory and filename can be
arbitrary -- they do not affect the treatment of the data within ODK
Briefcase (or ODK Aggregate).

Note that ODK Briefcase does not detect duplicate data and merge identical
records. Once you pull data into ODK Briefcase, if you re-pull the data,
you will end up with a duplicate row inside ODK Briefcase. De-duping is
done only by ODK Aggregate.

Hi Ricardo,

I'm sorry -- I thought that you had a very simple question that I could
jump in and answer. As for why Briefcase would not be working -- why it is
not accepting your forms -- that sounds much more complicated. Personally,
I have never used Briefcase for that. My guess is that it could fail for
any number of reasons (e.g., you may not be giving the right login
information, or the user with which you are logging in may not have
sufficient permission).

The true experts should be able to help you. But you will dramatically
increase their ability to help by being extremely extremely extremely
specific about your problem: what you are trying to do, what you have
already tried, and how specifically it has failed to work. For example: how
does it fail? Is there an error message? If so, what is it? Without this
kind of information, it will be extremely difficult for the team to be of
much help. They will make heroic efforts regardless of the information you
provide, but you will get to the right answer faster the more you help with
specifics.

Best,

Chris

Thanks Chris and Mitch, I supposed that I needed to be more specific. My
problem may be exact the ODK SD-Card folder structure and nomenclature like
Mitch put. But if you guys allow me, I will continue generic with only one
question. The case is the client dosen't has devices with good conections
to upload the collect results directly from the field to server (ODK
Aggregate onto Google AppSpot). I'll need to upload the submitions for
them. Please, someone could say in generic answers what is the step-by-step
to do this?

  1. figure out how to connect the phone to your computer, typically using a
    USB cable.
  2. figure out how to "Turn on USB Storage", or, perhaps, it will just
    automatically show a mounted drive.
  3. become familiar with what displays on your computer.
    a) if it shows as a new disk drive or mounted drive (OSX), then you can
use ODK Briefcase and "Mounted Android SD Card" to pull data.
    b) if it shows a multimedia device, then you will need to open a file
browser to that device, hand-type \odk into the address bar, and then copy
the contents of that directory over to your PC and use the "Custom Path to
ODK Directory" mechanism. The multimedia device driver is very buggy and
annoying, as it doesn't give full visibility to the SD Card all the time.
If you can't figure out how to do this, you may need to remove the SD Card
from the phone and plug that into your phone. There may be other tools on
the phone that could zip up a directory and e-mail it to you. OI File
Manager may also be useful for this purpose.
  4. delete the files using ODK Collect after you have imported them into
Briefcase (so you don't repeatedly process them).
