Assign different set of ordered records to each data collector

Is it possible to assign an ordered set of records to each data collector in ODK? For example we are monitoring plants that are identified by row and position in a grid. We would ideally like to assign a batch of records to each data collector that has 3 fields pre-populated (row, position, and status of the plant from the previous year). I haven't been able to find an example of this for ODK.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Hi,

You can do this using Smap Server which is a Java Rosa compliant
alternative to odkAggregate. It has task management functionality that
includes the ability to do follow up surveys that you can assign to
individual enumerators. The video in this link shows how this is done:
http://blog.smap.com.au/version-16-01/ The video shows the use of
webforms but of course you can use fieldTask which is an odkCollect
compatible android app to complete the tasks.

Thanks for your response Neil. I looked at your video for the latest version of Smap & basing one form on another would probably fit our needs, as long as you can specify the order. Is it possible to get version 16-01? I didn't find it on the download page of the website.

Thanks,
Gretel

Hi Gretel,

I have been holding off on making 16.01 available via downloads as there
were some major structural changes and it is still in Beta testing on a
number of my hosted servers. I am considering making 16.02, (to be
released on the 21st), as available for download.

An alternative to hosting your own server would be to use an Amazon cloud
server that I can host for you which means you get support at a low cost.

The ordering of the tasks on the phone is possible but may require some
coding, (on my part). You can specify an address for the tasks and this
address can be formed from the existing data, in your case presumably row
and position. I could add the concept of sorting tasks by address. It
would seem a generally useful concept so I can certainly put this on my
todo list.

regards

Neil

Hi Neil,

I can see where adding an "orderBy" field could be useful for many users.
We often use an "optimal path" function in R (similar to a best route
finder in GIS) to generate an ordered list of locations to visit for data
collection efficiency in the field. It's immediately obvious to the data
collection where to go next, which saves a lot of time.

I'm really interested in exploring your application more. We have two
separate modes of data collection that we work with: recording data on
plants that we've planted (which I described already) and surveying natural
populations of plants annually. In this second mode we rely on really good
GPS points and aluminum tags placed at the base of each plant to track
thousands of plants at 30 sites (over 20 years!). So far we have separated
our demography data collection from our GPS data -- carrying detailed paper
maps on a clipboard and then using handheld PDAs with Pendragon Forms to
collect data.

I envision the ability to visit a site with a tablet, pull up a map of the
plants in the immediate vicinity, click on a point to open a form with
previous information about the plant, and enter data on the status of the
plant for the current year. Would this be possible with Smap?

Thanks,
Gretel

Hi Gretel,

Sounds very interesting it would be great to work with you. You are right
the order by feature will be generally useful and I shall add it.

In fieldTask there are two tabs, one showing the list of forms and tasks,
the other showing the tasks on a map. If you click on the task on the map
nothing happens! I need to add that capability in but it is pretty simple.

Neil

Hi Gretel,

It seems our survey platform can do what you described. We can schedule a
Skype call to explore this further if you're interested.
