Best PDA for ODK for around $150 per unit?

Hi All,
I'm about to run a large survey in Uganda and have a limited budget. We'll go with ODK, but any advice on a good smart phone/tablet for around $150/unit? I'm talking the US price because we can probably bring some in. I think battery life and good GPS are probably key features we want.

I hadn't thought of using tablets, but if someone wants to argue that they are worth the extra costs, I'd be interested to learn what tablets in the $150 range could work best.

Thanks!

I was part of a study 2 years ago. We had Asus memo pad. Battery and GPS
was reliable.

I don't know how much they cost then or now.

I had a conversation about using very cheap (but no GPS/camera) e-ink
readers like the Nook on this group a while back, here is a link:

Other than that I have used first gen Google Nexus 7 and been quite happy,
these about £50-60 GBP refurbished. Despite their age can still have the
latest Android version on them; this was important to me for general
security concerns and being able to set up 'guest' accounts natively.

Hi Carroll

We currently run scale program in Kenya and Uganda, we started off using Samsung Galaxy pocket phones which have really good battery but the screen is so small it caused a lot of errors during data collection so this may be something you may also want to consider.
We now use Techno Y4 and Y6 phones which are well in your budget, come with a 1 year warranty if you buy then from an authorised techo supplier, have good battery life, large screens and good picture, gps, memory and processing power for ODK data collection which we do continually.

Cheers

Hi Carroll,

I've had good luck with the Moto G
(https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K0NRZSW) paired with 16 GB
internal SD cards. I've sometimes added USB batteries for campaigns
that need extra power.

And like Richard, I'm also a big fan of the Nexus 7, but those are
hard to find these days. Tablets are nice because you can see more and
there is much more battery. Whether or not it's worth it depends on
your form and your data collectors.

http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-budget-android-phone/ has a few
other options. Don't be afraid to buy the devices in-country. You
might be able to get them cheaper from the carriers in bulk and not
have to deal with customs.
