Collect v1.6.1, Build v0.3.0, and Briefcase v1.5.0 are now available!

Hi all,

April's updates to Collect, Build, and Briefcase are now available,
and if you care about offline data collection at scale, there is a lot
to be excited about!

We've made Collect much smaller to download and improved date
handling, Build is about 100x faster for big forms and can now be used
entirely offline, and Briefcase de-duplicates exports to save disk
space and reduce data cleaning.

Across all three tools, we had more 25 individual contributors adding
features, fixing bugs, and improving the quality of the code. We've
put the highlights below, but be sure to check out the full release
notes!

ODK improves a lot faster if you contribute! If you are a user, please
file issues when you find them. If you are a developer, join us on
http://slack.opendatakit.org and help fix those issues for the next
release. Together, we can make ODK even better!

Dear Yaw,

Congratulations for this wonderful tool. Do you know if there's a user
manual or any tutorial on how to use Build Offline?

Best regards,

capture date and time as required fields. Right now the time field is

Hello Gichecha,

I'm sorry to hear the update has caused you some problems! It sounds
like you have a blank time field with a read-only appearance. I
suspect that it has been used to try to get the amount of time
enumerators spend in each question, does that sound right?

This strategy relies on the fact that blank date and time fields used
to default to the current time when they were first accessed. This was
a long-standing bug because blank values are supposed to be blank. We
have addressed this in 1.6.1.

If you want to keep using this strategy to get a rough estimate of
time spent per question, you'll need to go back to a Collect version
before 1.6.0. You can download these at

Note that this approach is not a reliable way of knowing how long
enumerators have spent on each question because swiping back and forth
in a form, jumping between questions and editing a form after
completion are not tracked. That is, the time field only captures the
first time an enumerator lands on its screen.

We know that getting accurate timing information for forms is
important so the May release will include a new feature for collecting
timing data. I encourage you to review the feature design and comment
on it if you are interested -

Do let me know whether I understood your needs correctly. If not, it
would be helpful to learn more about how this field has been used.

Hélène.

Hello!

There isn't currently separate documentation but this version adds an
information box to the bottom right corner of the window. It provides
descriptions of the software functionality and hints on how to use
different form controls.

We hope that helps. Don't hesitate to ask questions on this list as
they come up.

Hello Hélène ,

Thanks for this clarification. I have now tested the new ODK Build Offline
and found it very easy to use.

I have though another question about the Presets, these lists of choices
that can be saved and reused in other questions in the same form: These
Presets are not apparently saved in the computer because if I start a new
form, the saved Presets are not available for upload.

It would be wonderful if the Presets could be saved locally in the
computer to be reused
thus saving a lot of time to users.

I want to add that I've been always using Excel to build forms because ODK
Build online requires a lot of Internet connexion time which is expensive
and inequally available in many rural regions in developing countries.
That's why I find this ODK Build Offline such a wonderful tool. It allows
even to export the form into Excel format if one needs to further refine
the form.

Thanks again to the core team and all the people who created this new tool.

Hi Abdelghani,

I'm glad that the offline functionality has been a good addition!

Can you please file your need for global presets as a feature request
at https://github.com/opendatakit/build/issues/new.

Once we have that filed, we can begin the discussions around how best
to implement it.

Thanks,

Yaw
