CSV output file from briefcase with misplaced data

Hello all,

I have a problem of which I could not find any other post.

I have pulled about 2500 instances from odk briefcase using custom path to
ODK directory, which I have done before with other datasets and without any
issues at that time. This time, however, the output files contain much
misplaced data when I import them (import text file from external data)
into excel or spss. It seems to occasionally cut text variables in half and
proceed in the next row (where there is no comma or anything whatsoever).
Opening the csv file in notepad does not show anything extraordinary.

I am checking with those who conducted the field work if they have made
changes to the form over the course of data collection, could that be
potential cause of this problem?

Thanks in advance!
Sivan

Hi Sivan,

Trace the problem. Start with the XML data on the SD card of the phone
(use an on-device file explorer), then try pulling into Briefcase and
looking at the files in the Briefcase storage location, then export to
CSV from Briefcase and see what happens. My guess is that the problem
is with your importing into Excel/SPSS.

Yaw

Thank you Yaw, indeed the problem was with importing. When I did it using
STATA while switching 'quote binding' to 'strict', the problem disappeared.
