Data backup plan when not possible to upload to server

Hi,

I have a question about data backup plan. We will go to some villages where they could be no wifi and no phone connection to have hotspot. Enumerators will stay in each village for 2 days, but we want enumerators to back up the data everyday. Supervisors will meet enumerators every second day to examine and mark surveys as finalized. Then enumerators send completed surveys to the server from the tablets when they have wifi access on the road.

The problem is about data backup. We want enumerators to back up the data everyday and I am thinking about enumerators zipping the ODK folder every day and put it in their USBs. The tablets to be used in the field is Samsung Galaxy Note 4, a Android 4.x device so I cannot make the path of ODK directory appear under ODK Briefcase to pull directly. I know that for ODK briefcase it is suggested to only pull data of finalized surveys (https://opendatakit.org/use/briefcase/), but supervisors won't be able to mark surveys as finalized everyday.
I wonder, if we really have to use the backup data, is it possible to transfer back to the tablet the xml survey files from the instance folder from enumerators' backup data, and send to the server, to avoid the possible duplicates of incomplete and complete surveys caused by ODK Briefcase?

Any good data back up plan would be greatly appreciated for this context!

Thank you very much!

Best,
E

To simply back up the data, you only need to:

(1) zip up the /sdcard/odk directory (everything).
(2) copy that to your backup media.

(i.e., no ODK Briefcase)

If something happens to that tablet, you should be able to reconstitute the
ODK Collect state on a different tablet (that is one reason we write
everything to the /sdcard/odk directory). In general, that new tablet MUST
use the same version of ODK Collect
and SHOULD be the same model of
device and have the same Android OS version
-- there are known differences
among versions across 4.x OS levels that will impact your ability to
reconstitute your ODK Collect state.

To do that:

(1) install the SAME version of ODK Collect and any supporting applications
on that new device.
(2) go to your device Settings / Apps tool and ensure that ODK Collect is
Force Stopped (this ensures that it is not trying to access anything in the
odk directory).
(3) delete any existing /sdcard/odk directory
(4) copy the zip you are restoring over to that device.
(5) unzip
(6) launch ODK Collect.
(7) review the General Settings and Admin Settings for ODK Collect. These
are not preserved by this transfer.

As with anything, I recommend following these steps at least once before
you deploy
your surveys to the field so that you understand how the
recovery process works and what settings, etc. you will need to manually
re-enter.
