Date format

Hi, All.

I just noticed that when I downloaded data from the phone through ODK
briefcase and exported it to csv, my date/time field displays data in this
format: 05 22, 13 3:29:32 PM. How do make it appear in this format:
5/22/2013 3:29:32 PM?

Thanks.

Vinia,

Is this in the raw .csv file (opened in a text editor so you can see what's
really coming from ODK), or in Excel? If you're opening in Excel, it will
very often take what it recognizes as a date/time and format it however it
is set to format dates and times.

If you're importing into a statistical package, you'll need to parse the
ODK date/time strings into whatever internal date/time format is relevant
for your software. Our Stata templates, for example, parse into native
Stata format, so that Stata commands can easily see and manipulate those
variables.

Best,

Chris

Hi, Chris.

In the xml file in the instances folder it shows
"2013-05-22T15:28:06.865+08" but when I open the csv file,
both excel and and OOCalc displays 05 22, 13 3:28:06 PM.

Thanks,

Vinia

Hi Vinia,

The date/time formatting may be coming from your OS language/region
settings. In any case, the thing you really want to do is open the .csv
file in a text editor so that you can see the raw file. Excel and OOCalc
may both re-format, but the question is whether the format coming from ODK
is okay in the .csv. I suspect that it is. In that case, you may need to
use Excel and/or OOCalc to change the display format of those cells to
whatever format suits you.

Best,

Chris
