e-Ink & ODK?

Hi List,

It looks like the last "Nook Simple Touch Reader" is running Android.

Has anyone tested ODK on such device? What was the user experience ?
Would you recommend it?

Because of e-Ink, It would look like a good device especially for
survey under heavy sun. Anyone has experience to share on the subject?

Thanks in advance,
Edouard

edourad,

i know a few groups have tried it odk on a nook (not sure which one).
it works, but the info i got suggested that the touch interaction
wasn't too good. perhaps you can try it and report back?

looks like ben wolfe from the openmrs team has it running on his nook.

not a great picture, but you can see it at

Here's a better picture I snapped:

The touch screen on the nooktouch is not quite like other android
devices, but its reasonable for the e-ink trade-off. I learned to
both delay my response expectations and also to type without waiting
for the screen to update to show my key presses.

The rooting process is very similar to the nook color: put some files
onto a sd card, boot from that sd card, change some settings using
adb, and then install any apps using adb. There are plenty of
tutorials and even an app that will walk you through it (windows-only,
unfortunately for me)

The only problem with the ereaders-as-tablet is there aren't the
typical android "back", "home", and "menu" buttons. The solution is
an app called "SoftKeys" that adds an ever-present button to the
screen. Pressing that gives you a popup for home/menu/back. You can
see the ever present button in my picture above. Its in the middle of
the screen and towards the right side. Other limitations for some
deployments: no camera, no sound output, no gps, no cell/gprs/3g (wifi
only)

Battery life is measured in weeks. I've charged it approx three times
in the 6 weeks I've had it. Thats with me reading quite a bit, messing
with the android in it, importing books to the kindle app, etc.
