GPS coordinates

Hello everybody,

I have a question concerning the GPS coordinates given by Collect. Which
standard do they belong to? Or is the standard device dependent?

Thank you.

Oliver

I don't understand what you're asking. The coordinates are in lat, long,
altitude and accuracy, measured in meters.

Oliver,

The GPS settings are controlled outside of Collect. The standard WGS 84
global datum is typically used for GPS equipment. I am not sure if this can
be changed on most phones, or if it is possible to specify a projection
system on the device itself. However, most GIS software will do the
appropriate transformation If you need to map your GPS coordinates with data
based on another datum, or projected data. I imagine the WGS84 is also use
for the vertical datum.

Many countries produce geographic layers that use a different datum and/or
specific projection system, so if your points end up in the ocean instead of
on land - there is an explanation for that!

As an aside, GPS is the de-facto standard for global satellite navigation
systems but Russia operates a competing system called GLONAS that uses a
datum called PZ90. They have plans of imposing additional import taxes on
handsets that doesn't support GLONASS and sold there.

The very few devices that supports both GPS and GLONAS are reported to be
more accurate and consumes less power than GPS-only units.
