Images uploaded by ODK Collect lose EXIF location?

1. What is the issue? Please be detailed.

I’ve captured images with ODK Collect app (using the default camera) and when I download them from ODK Central they don’t show EXIF location information (geotags)

If I use the same default camera software to capture a new image, I find EXIF location information.

I couldn’t instruct ODK Collect to use Open Camera app instead of the default one through the parameters attribute using “app=net.sourceforge.opencamera,max-pixels=1024” Appearance is set to “new” to allow only new captured images.

Default camera app and Open Camera both have set the proper permissions and options to save this information.

I’m using LineageOS 24 in a Motorola Edge 30 cellphone. Any idea of what could I be missing?

Couple of questions for you...

  • What version of Collect are you using?
  • Has this behavior always occurred, or did it start after an update/change?
  • Does the same form produce geotagged images on a different device?

Hi Yaw,

So far, the issue only occurs on my LineageOS phone (version 23.2-2026) running ODK Collect 2026.1.2. Yesterday, we tested two different phones with stock Android, and the EXIF geotags were recorded correctly. I hadn’t considered that the operating system might be the cause.

This week, we’ll test at least three more phones, all running stock Android. I’ll share the results here as a follow-up.
