Information for a new user

Hi people,

Just wondering if there is any resource i can use to find more about how odk
works. I looked at the Use section of the website and it very clear how it
works on the basic level but i just want to find out a couple more things if
you guys don't mind me asking.

  1. Does the collect software install on the android device downloads the
forms from the aggrate server every time we use a form for collection?.
  2. Does the GPS function of odk support any GPS adroid functionality or do i
need to look for specific adroid device with specific GPS capability?.
  3. What versions of android is supported?. Can i use ODK on android
    tablets?.

Just a suggestion. It would be nice if we can have a blog or a thread which
users can post their setup they have for new users to use as a guide. Just a
suggestion.

Thank you to the developers and volunteers of this project. It really is a
very useful tool.

Regards,

Nome

hi nome,

welcome to the project!

  1. no. once you download a form, it is available offline on the phone.
odk collect is designed to work well offline, so the only time you
need to talk to the server is downloading new forms or sending in data
(and even those two actions can be done without internet
    connectivity).

  2. odk collect 1.1.7 supports all location (gps, cell and wifi) modes
that android supports. odk collect 1.1.5 only supports true gps. in
general, if you want to get accurate location, you should get a phone
that has a real gps -- this is especially relevant if you are using
odk in a developing country where cell and wifi localization will
    likely not work.

  3. we support android os 1.5+ and greater. if the device (including
tablets, e-readers, netbooks, etc) runs any flavor android, chances
    are, it'll work.

we just added a deeper help section with a faq at
http://opendatakit.org/help/faqs/ and links to training guides at
http://opendatakit.org/help/training-guides/. our blog at
http://opendatakit.org/blog often features new odk deployments with
links to their setups.
http://opendatakit.org/2011/09/mapping-soil-conditions-in-africa-with-odk/
is a great example of this.

the reason we generally don't post setups is because the android
ecosystem changes too quickly for us to keep it up to date. if you (or
others) are interested in having and maintaining such a resource
(maybe just a google doc), we are glad to link to it and encourage
others to help you up-date it.

hope that helps,

yaw
