Manage big list (20 000+) of choices in ODK

Hello,
We're using ODK to collect data relative to hospitals in various countries.
The first questions are typically about selecting a province/district and
then the facility using a cascading select.

The problem is that for our biggest project we have more than 20 000
facilities at the last level. We managed to create the form and upload it
using the ONA service, but it won't open in ODK (it wait for a long time
then crash).

Our current solution has been to "split" that form into identical parts
dedicated to each province, but it's not really practical.

Any advice/experience with very large choices? The ODK doc refer to the
option of putting long lists into separated CSV file, has anyone
experience with this?

Thanks a lot,

Martin

Some information is here: http://xlsform.org/#external and here
https://opendatakit.org/help/form-design/external-itemsets/

Larger forms will run better on larger, more powerful, tablets. Those tend
to have more memory (RAM) and be faster.

Placing the data in an external csv moves the data out of the form
definition, which will greatly shrink the size of the form and reduce the
amount of memory required.
